Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these features are skunks known for?

Answer: Poor eyesight

Although skunks have an excellent sense of smell, hearing, and balance, they have notoriously poor vision. They are known for the malodorous spray they use when startled or afraid. If they don't see you coming, you will startle them, then they will spray you, and then you will STINK for a very long time.
2. Which of these statements about sloths is true?

Answer: They only poop once a week.

The only true statement was that a sloth poops once a week. They come down from their tree and dig a shallow hole which they use to relieve themselves. They cover the pile with dirt and go back up the tree to eat leaves and nap.
3. Other than humans, what are the only two animals that hunt sea lions regularly?

Answer: Sharks and Killer Whales

The Sea Lion is a pinniped, meaning it has a "winged" foot. These social animals live in large groups and are found in almost every ocean or sea on the planet. The only animals, other than man, that pose a threat to sea lions are sharks and killer whales.
4. Where should you plan to travel to if you are wanting to see a saiga antelope in the wild?

Answer: Carpathian Mountains

The critically endangered saiga can be found grazing in the Carpathian and Caucasus Mountain ranges of the Eurasian steppe. A saiga has an oversized proboscis (nose) that helps it filter out dust and to cool/heat their blood. A saiga's horns are considered precious commodities and are crushed and used in some forms of folk medicine.
5. In which of these locations would you be most likely to see a spectacled bear in the wild?

Answer: In the trees of Bolivia

This arboreal mammal makes its home in the Andes Mountains, ranging from Bolivia to Venezuela. Their name comes from the white rings around their eyes which give the appearance of wearing 'spectacles'. This diurnal bear is shy, secretive, and one of the least carnivorous members of the bear family.
6. A snowshoe hare can do which of the following unusual things?

Answer: Carry more than one litter of babies at a time.

The snowshoe hare has two uteruses meaning that it can be pregnant with two different litters, of different ages, at the same time. Found in the northern regions of North America, the fur of the snowshoe hare changes from brown in the summer to white in the winter.
7. The sperm whale carries large amounts of sperm in its head.

Answer: False

This is false. What sperm whales carry in their heads is the largest brain in the animal kingdom. These magnificent mammals are able to dive to depths over 3,000 ft. where they hunt for squid, fish, and octopus. These are the largest toothed whales on the planet and can easily eat over a ton of food a day.
8. The squirrel is a rodent just like the mouse and the rat.

Answer: True

Squirrels are rodents that are found over much of the planet. They are related to rats, mice, chipmunks and groundhogs. They are known for hiding large stores of nuts, such as acorns, for when they wake up from winter hibernation. They have long nails to help them climb and to dig. Baby squirrels are called kittens and are born twice a year, one in the spring time and again at the end of summer.
9. Because of their size, the Sambar deer is often mistaken for which of the following animals?

Answer: Elk

Because of their large size and flamboyant antlers, the Sambar deer is sometimes mistaken for elk. Usually found grazing in the Asian woodlands, they tend to live in groups of about half a dozen individuals that consist of the alpha male and his harem. They have excellent hearing and sight, and their danger sound is often described as sounding like a car alarm.
10. Which of the following options best describes the serval?

Answer: Solitary and nocturnal.

The African wild cat known as a serval is a solitary cat with crepuscular and nocturnal habits. They come together to mate but otherwise live alone. A major threat to this beautiful cat is the exotic pet trade. Some people think it would be fun to own a wild cat which has led to deliberate breeding between servals and domestic cats.

The result is called a 'savannah cat'. The problem is that wild animals do not lose their wild instincts for hundreds of years, or more. These hybrids make poor pets and most states either forbid them or require special licenses to own them.
