Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Kuwait is a desert, so the first mammal that comes to mind is the camel. But, there is more than one kind of camel. Which type of camel is found in Kuwait?

Answer: Dromedary

The dromedary is the one-humped camel that is found all over Arabia. The Bactrian is the two-humped camel is found in China and other areas of east Asia. The guanaco and vicuna are scientifically related to both camels and llamas and are found in South America.
2. This next mammal found in Kuwait is called a jerboa. It has very strong back legs and tiny front legs and a tuft of fur at the tip of its tail. Which of the following animals is about the same size as a jerboa?

Answer: Mouse

Jerboas are nocturnal and spend the days in their underground burrows to escape the desert heat. It is a small rodent. The specific breed of jerboa that is found in Kuwait and Arabia is called the lesser Egyptian jerboa. It eats mostly seeds and grasses and has adapted to live on very little water.
3. Our next Kuwaiti mammal is a domesticated animal, not a wild one. This animal is used primarily for food and is ritually sacrificed in a religious ceremony (Eid Al-Adha) following the Islamic Hajj time.

Answer: Sheep

Sheep (lambs, specifically) is a very common meat in Kuwait. Many people just translate the word to "meat" (as in, if you ask, "What is that?", the answer "meat" means it is lamb).

The sacrifice re-enacts Prophet Abraham being willing to sacrifice his son for God, but then God, when seeing Prophet Abraham's willingness to do so, sent him a ram to sacrifice instead.
4. Next up is the most common feral mammal in Kuwait. These mammals are kept as pets in many countries of the world.

Answer: Cat

Cats, cats, cats! Near every garbage can or dumpster, you can find one or more feral cats! I will tell you what the Kuwaitis say is the reason for so many feral cats. It is said that after the invasion by Iraq in 1990, so many public services were destroyed that there was trash and rotten food everywhere. So, what happens with trash and rotten food everywhere? There comes RATS! The solution was to bring in Egyptian cats to get rid of the rats! Well, it must have worked because I have been in Kuwait for many years and have only seen one rat, but the cats stayed, bred, and multiplied! I don't know for 100% fact if this story is completely true, but it is true that there are feral cats all over Kuwait!
5. Let's head to the Arabian Gulf (or Persian Gulf to some) and look for our next mammal in the water. In the past, this mammal was frequently mistaken for a mermaid by many sailors.

Answer: Dugong

People who visit Kuwait should go on a sea tour in order to experience the aquatic wildlife. Dolphins can also be seen in the Gulf; manatees are not found in the Arabian Gulf, and I have never heard of an Arabian seal.
6. Our next Kuwaiti mammal is the desert hedgehog. When it is frightened, it will roll up for protection, becoming a ball of spines that will deter many predators. What does a desert hedgehog eat?

Answer: Insects, scorpions, spiders and snakes

The desert hedgehog is one of the smallest hedgehogs. It is found in Arabia, the Middle East, and northeast African countries.
7. A flying mammal in Kuwait? There are several different species of bats that can be found, if you are willing to be out at night looking for them! Into which scientific order do these insect-eating flying mammals belong?

Answer: Chiroptera

I have only seen bats a few times in Kuwait, but I am told they are much easier to spot when camping in the desert in the spring or fall, when the insects breed in the rainy season.
8. A big cat in Kuwait? Yes, indeed. The caracal is actually classified as a "small cat" by scientific standards. It has very long, tufted eats as its trademark, but also is known for having eyes that are different from most other cats - what is that difference?

Answer: Eyes dilate into round, not vertically-slit, pupils

I admit I didn't know that much about the caracal until I started doing this quiz. I knew WHAT it was, but not many details. The most interesting facts that I found are that caracals will not eat internal organs of their prey and they will scrape the meat off the flesh, in order to not eat the fur of the prey. The caracal is the "picky-eater" of the cat family.
9. Sadly, the next mammal USED to be found in Kuwait, but was officially declared to be extinct in 2008. This mammal, a type of gazelle, was hunted out of existence by humans. It is named for a large Arabic country.

Answer: Saudi Gazelle

There have been attempts by various organizations to find pure Saudi gazelles in private zoos or collections in order to work on a breeding program, but the attempts have been in vain. Many gazelles that have been claimed to be Saudi gazelles are hybrids, not pure breeds. It is a shame that humans have decimated a beautiful, graceful animal.
10. Arabic is the language spoken in Kuwait, and this mammal's name is from the Arabic word for 'fox'. This little nocturnal mammal has unusually large ears and a cream-colored, fluffy coat. Unfortunately, it is often captured for its fur and the exotic pet trade.

Answer: Fennec Fox

This poor critter has a redundant name - 'fennek' means fox in Arabic, so we are calling it fox fox! Unlike most other fox species, fennec foxes tend to live in packs and have no musk glands. They also mate for life.
