Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This land mammal is a pack hunter and largest member of the dog family. Its Latin name is Canis lupus. Can you name it?

Answer: Wolf

Wolves are amazing beautiful creatures. There are over 30 different sub-species found in Eurasia and North America. They are social animals, travelling in packs, hunting together and raising their young in families. Wolves are mainly carnivores, eating large hoofed animals such as deer. Humans are afraid of wolves but really don't have a need to be as wolf attacks are rare and mostly attributed to rabid wolves.

In fact, it's wolves who should be afraid of humans such as hunters and ranchers.
2. The smallest type of this member of the Ursidae family weighs about 60lbs while the largest can weigh more than a thousand pounds. Can you name this widespread mammal?

Answer: Bear

Bears are some of the most powerful and largest animals on Earth. They have excellent senses of hearing, smell and sight and are extremely intelligent. There are 8 different sub-species of bear across the world - North American black bears, brown bears, polar bears, Asiatic black bears, Andean bears, panda bears, sloth bears, and sun bears.

Male grizzly bears can weigh more than 700lbs and run as fast as 40mph! They are found mostly in Alaska and hibernate for 5-7 months of the year.
3. This large wildcat native only to the Americas is also called a puma. Unlike other large cats it does not roar but purrs like a house cat. Can you name this feline?

Answer: Cougar

The cougar is the largest and most powerful wildcat in Canada. Also called the mountain lion, puma, red tiger and catamount, this large cat is generally shy of humans and is known to keep to its natural habitat of forests and other areas which humans generally don't inhabit. Cougars are excellent swimmers and climbers and can jump more than six metres.
4. The only animal that has antlers, there are over sixty species worldwide. Males of this hoofed animal can weigh up to 300 lbs. What animal am I referring to?

Answer: Deer

Deer are excellent jumpers and swimmers. They're cud-chewers, otherwise known as ruminants, and eat mostly grasses, shrubs and trees. They have a four-chambered stomach and have high nutritional requirements so they'll eat easily digestible shoots, young grasses, soft twigs and lichens. Most deer will have one to two fawns at a time and young are primarily taken care of by their mother.
5. This mammal has several uncomplimentary nicknames including trash panda, dumpster bandit and garbage bandit. It has adapted well to urban life due to its small hands and ability to eat just about anything. What is this opportunistic animal with the characteristic mask around the eyes?

Answer: Raccoon

This nocturnal animal has a reputation for being mischievous not only because of the telltale bandit mask around the eyes but also because of its boldness in hunting for food. The raccoon will forage in garbage cans and is quite intelligent, figuring out how to open different bins, making it a pain in the cities it inhabits.

In North America raccoons are common from Canada through to Panama.
6. This small mammal has a long, slender body and is an extremely proficient hunter, burrowing underground for prey. What is this cunning predator known for being a skilled climber, swimmer and runner?

Answer: Weasel

Weasels can be found all across the world except for Antarctica and Australia. They eat rodents and sometimes will eat poultry and rabbits so are a bit of pest for farmers. They are quite small, generally no larger than 8.5 inches and they have long slender bodies, helping them burrow and find small rodents to eat. Culturally there are interesting meanings associated with them, for example, in Greek culture, if you see a weasel near your house it's a sign of bad luck and in Japanese folklore weasels are said to shapeshift.
7. This extremely large member of the bovine family is a herbivore with a thick shaggy winter coat. Can you name the National Mammal of the United States?

Answer: Bison

Bisons are closely related to domestic cattle but have never been tamed. They are extremely large, are known for not having a great temperament, and can run up to 65km per hour. All of these facts have made attempts at domestication failures. They're difficult to keep fenced in, even with razor wire, which bison herds have run right through.

They are migratory animals and are large grazers, eating mostly grasses on the plains where they roam.
8. This mammal, with characteristic pointy triangular ears, is small to medium sized and also known for its bushy tail. A group of these mammals is called a skulk or a leash. Can you name it?

Answer: Fox

The red fox is the largest of the fox species and the most abundant throughout North America. Foxes are omnivores and have a varied diet, eating small animals such as hamsters, mice and moles as well as fish and insects. They will also eat plants and fruit.

They will compete with wolves and among the various sub-species of foxes for food and fall prey to large cats such as bobcats, cougars and lynxes.
9. This animal has an extremely effective defensive weapon that takes about 10 days to re-supply. Short-lived in the wild because of its poor eyesight and susceptibility to being hit by traffic, which mammal is this?

Answer: Skunk

Skunks are found throughout Canada and the U.S. as well as into Northern Mexico. Due to the awesome odorous defensive capability it has, the skunk has few natural enemies and predators such as coyotes, foxes, badgers and bobcats will only hunt a skunk if they are starving.

Otherwise, skunks are pretty much left alone. The striped skunk is a major carrier of rabies, second behind the raccoon.
10. This mammal has a short wide body, short legs for digging and a characteristic stripe down its back. What is this animal, with a name that comes from the word 'bageard'?

Answer: Badger

Badgers are nocturnal, omnivorous creatures that burrow underground and live in burrows called setts. These setts can be quite extensive. In North America, badgers primarily have a pretty neutral relationship with coyotes and although they do sometimes prey on each other, they can be found to hunt alongside each other. Badgers dig for most of their food underground and will dig for and chase rodents.

At one point in time, badger meat was a staple for Native Americans and European settlers although that is no longer the case.
