This mostly black bird is one of a small percentage of bird species worldwide that is "parasitic", meaning it lays its eggs in other birds' nests, leaving its young to be raised by unknowing surrogate parents. Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This unmistakable bird, which was wiped out of Michigan by 1900 due largely to hunting and was later reintroduced, is one of the state's largest. Despite its bulk, it can fly nearly 60 mph and it roosts in trees at night. What bird is it?

Answer: Wild Turkey

Habitat loss also contributed to the downfall of the Wild Turkey in Michigan. These dull-looking, bulky birds can now be found quite readily in the lower peninsula communing with deer in what I think is a plot to take over the world.
2. Which of the following species of birds is not sexually dimorphic?

Answer: Green Heron

Female Rose-breasted Grosbeaks are not rose-breasted. Female Scarlet Tanagers are not scarlet. Female Purple Finches are not purple. These birds get their names from the males of their respective species. On a side note, neither male nor female Green Herons are all that green.
3. Tree Swallows live all over Michigan in the summertime. What colors might you find on an adult Tree Swallow?

Answer: Blue to Blue-green and White

Tree Swallows have a white belly with a shiny blue elsewhere. The blue becomes much greener in the fall. Barn Swallows are blue and reddish brown.
4. This bird, classified as a shorebird, has two black neck bands and doesn't live at the shore. It sometimes pretends to have a broken wing to draw intruders away from its ground nest. Its name derives from a noise it makes. What is this odd bird?

Answer: Killdeer

The Killdeer has black, white, brown, and orange feathers. Its nests are only slight depressions in gravel and are hard to detect.
5. This mostly black bird is one of a small percentage of bird species worldwide that is "parasitic", meaning it lays its eggs in other birds' nests, leaving its young to be raised by unknowing surrogate parents. Besides a few transient cuckoos, it is the only Michigan bird that engages in this behavior. What is it?

Answer: Brown-headed Cowbird

Young Brown-headed Cowbirds have been raised by at least 200 different species of birds. You know you've spotted one when you see a Warbler or other small bird feeding a young bird twice its own size.
6. At any time during the year in Michigan, you might see a Great Horned Owl. It has excellent hearing.

Answer: True

The Great Horned Owl does indeed have fantastic hearing: it can hear a mouse crawling under a foot of snow.
7. This bird possesses the rare quality among raptors of being sexually dimorphic with regard to coloration. It is fairly easy to identify because of its small size, its two black vertical facial stripes, and its rust-colored back and tail. What is this beautiful bird of prey, formerly known as a "Sparrow Hawk"?

Answer: American Kestrel

American Kestrels live in cavities rather than building nests and they sometimes feed on other birds.
8. This easy-to-identify bird builds a pendulous nest rather than a cup-shaped one. Its males and females look quite different. It is easy to attract with orange halves, grape jelly, or sugar water. What is this famous bird with a major sports franchise named after it?

Answer: Baltimore Oriole

Kinglets also build pendulous nests and differ between the sexes, but nobody has ever heard of the Baltimore Kinglets.
9. This wonderful songbird is easily identifiable by its lemon yellow chest with a black "V"-shaped necklace. It is robin-shaped and has a brown back. What is it?

Answer: Eastern Meadowlark

The Eastern Meadowlark is the only Michigan bird with a yellow chest and black "V"-shaped necklace. It is called a "lark" because it is thought to sing like the larks of Europe but it is actually not a lark. It is more closely related to Grackles, Orioles, and Blackbirds.
10. If you were to see a large white bird with a freakishly long neck, a long yellow-orange bill, and black stilt-like legs wading in some shallow water, what bird of Southern Michigan summers would you be looking at?

Answer: Great Egret

The Great Egret had to be protected because people hunted it for its beautiful white plumage.
