Question 2 of 10
2. Reaching a maximum speed of about 45 mph on land, what large, and potentially deadly, bird has been found to have the fastest ground speed of any bird? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. This animal, in contrast to cheetahs, is capable of running long distances at nearly 30 mph. While also having one of the strongest bites and traveling in packs, what animal could simply run its prey to death? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. The animal usually referred to as the fastest known, can reach speeds of over 200 mph in high-altitude dives. Which falcon lays claim to this amazing feat? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Switching to very small animals, in 2014 a mite was discovered to move over 320 times its body length per second. Aside from its speed, it was discovered to thrive at what normally deadly temperature? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Usually no more than four inches long, this animal has the fastest punch ever known. Hitting its target twice in about one millisecond, the "smasher" type of what aquatic animal is both powerful for its size and blindingly fast? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. A stonefish catches its prey in approximately 1/100 of a second. The difference in pressure between the stonefish's mouth and the ocean makes the water act like a solid wall, preventing prey from escaping. What exactly does the stonefish create to suck up its food?

Answer: (one word)
Question 8 of 10
8. While in motion or just hovering, what creature lays claim to the fastest known heart rate at 1,260 beats per minute? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. In the ocean, there is great debate over what fish is the fastest. The fastest verified speed, 68 mph, belongs to not the marlin, but which related species? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. In November, 2016, scientists recorded bats flying up to 65 mph, by far the fastest flight speed recorded for a bat. What kind of bat, famous for having a large colony in the middle of Austin, Texas, has been observed flying so fast? Hint

quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Cheetahs, long known as the fastest land animal, also have, arguably, the fastest acceleration. Accelerating from 0 to 60 in three seconds, the cheetah can be compared to which car?

Answer: Corvette Z06

In those three seconds, the cheetah has taken only about three strides. A full-grown cheetah's stride is nearly 25 feet. However, if a cheetah were to run more than approximately 20 seconds at maximum speed, its body temperature would exceed 109ºF, and the cheetah would literally die mid-stride.
2. Reaching a maximum speed of about 45 mph on land, what large, and potentially deadly, bird has been found to have the fastest ground speed of any bird?

Answer: ostrich

Ostriches are also the largest bird species still living. While ostriches rarely attack humans (preferring to run away), their speed and deadly claws kill, on average, three people a year in South Africa alone.
3. This animal, in contrast to cheetahs, is capable of running long distances at nearly 30 mph. While also having one of the strongest bites and traveling in packs, what animal could simply run its prey to death?

Answer: spotted hyena

Hyenas are well known to have high endurance, making them almost impossible to outrun. Plagued by bad press, hyenas are actually very skilled pack hunters. Hunting primarily at night, they are better known as daytime scavengers.
4. The animal usually referred to as the fastest known, can reach speeds of over 200 mph in high-altitude dives. Which falcon lays claim to this amazing feat?

Answer: peregrine falcon

Some people claim the peregrine falcon isn't the fastest because the bird is simply in freefall when diving. Excluding dive speed would then make the common swift the fastest bird, at 70 mph.
5. Switching to very small animals, in 2014 a mite was discovered to move over 320 times its body length per second. Aside from its speed, it was discovered to thrive at what normally deadly temperature?

Answer: 140° F

A maximum of only half a mile per hour seems laughable for one of the fastest animals. However, that means if it were human-sized, it would be running nearly 1,400 mph. This particular mite was found in the summer, running on concrete and asphalt that were around 140° F.
6. Usually no more than four inches long, this animal has the fastest punch ever known. Hitting its target twice in about one millisecond, the "smasher" type of what aquatic animal is both powerful for its size and blindingly fast?

Answer: mantis shrimp

There are two broad categories of mantis shrimp, but both able to strike within one millisecond. Those that don't punch have spear-like weapons to slice prey instead of bashing it. The force behind the punch has been known to break the glass in an aquarium.
7. A stonefish catches its prey in approximately 1/100 of a second. The difference in pressure between the stonefish's mouth and the ocean makes the water act like a solid wall, preventing prey from escaping. What exactly does the stonefish create to suck up its food?

Answer: vacuum

Stonefish, exquisitely camouflaged for their coral reef habitat, are ambush predators able to sit unmoving for great lengths of time waiting for prey to swim close enough to attack. Excess skin allows the stonefish to greatly expand its mouth, causing the pressure difference, and thus, the vacuum.
8. While in motion or just hovering, what creature lays claim to the fastest known heart rate at 1,260 beats per minute?

Answer: hummingbird

A hummingbird's resting heart rate can drop to a snail-like 180 beats per minute. In comparison, if exercising, a human would have tachycardia at much over 200 beats per minute. A hummingbird's breathing rate can also reach unbelievable speeds - 250 breaths per minute.
9. In the ocean, there is great debate over what fish is the fastest. The fastest verified speed, 68 mph, belongs to not the marlin, but which related species?

Answer: sailfish

The fastest verified speed was 68 mph, but included the fish leaping out of the water. While sailfish, and those similar, such as swordfish, can sprint at speeds greater than 60 mph, they usually only swim that fast when hunting or escaping a fisherman.
10. In November, 2016, scientists recorded bats flying up to 65 mph, by far the fastest flight speed recorded for a bat. What kind of bat, famous for having a large colony in the middle of Austin, Texas, has been observed flying so fast?

Answer: Mexican free-tail

Also known as the Brazilian free-tail, bats from Frio Cave in Texas were monitored over the course of a week. All the bats tracked flew at least 60 mph, having discarded one bat's measurements because it would have been flying at nearly 100 mph.
