1. At the finishing post of Aintree Race Course, in England, you can read the following tombstone epitaph. I have omitted the heading which gives the name of the horse which is buried there. - "Respect this place / this hallowed ground / a legend here / his rest has found / his feet would fly / our spirits soar / he earned our love for evermore". What is the name of this famous horse?

Answer: Red Rum

Red Rum was a thoroughbred, bay gelding who won the Grand National three times in 1973, 1974 and 1977 - coming second in the intervening years of '75 and '76. This was a remarkable and unsurpassed achievement. He was an excellent jumper and only fell once in over 100 races.
2. What is the name of the dog which the Russians sent into space, in November 1957, on board Sputnik 2?

Answer: Laika

This experiment caused a great deal of controversy, discussion and protest throughout the world because Laika did not survive the flight. Sputnik 2 was not made to be retrievable and it was always known that the dog would die. For a long time after the flight, the Russians were unwilling to say how Laika had died but in 1998, after the Soviet regime had collapsed, Oleg Gazenko (one of the Russian scientists responsible for sending the dog into space) expressed regret for allowing her to die. - "Work with animals is a source of suffering to all of us. We treat them like babies who cannot speak.

The more time passes, the more I'm sorry about it. We shouldn't have done it... We did not learn enough from this mission to justify the death of the dog."
3. In March 1965, there were traffic jams in the area of Regent's Park, in London (England), because sightseers were flocking there hoping to catch a glimpse of a golden eagle which had escaped from London Zoo and taken refuge in the park. What name was given to this beautiful bird?

Answer: Goldie

During the twelve days of his freedom Goldie caught and ate a duck in a garden near the park and also attacked, but did not kill, two terriers. He eventually became hungry. A zoo-keeper tempted him back down to earth with a dead rabbit and he was recaptured.
4. There is an old story which tells us that, around 355 BC, a young boy named Alexander approached a wildly-kicking and bucking horse which nobody had been able to tame. Fearlessly he turned its head to face the sun so that it could not see its own shadow and it then stopped being frightened. The boy was able to control it and it became his own special and favourite horse. What name did Alexander give to him?

Answer: Bucephalus

Bucephalus served Alexander the Great faithfully in many battles. He died in 326 BC, after the Battle of Hydaspes, at the grand old age of 30. It seems that Alexander started the tradition of famous people giving names to their favourite horses.
Toes was Julius Caesar's horse. Incitatus belonged to Caligula and Marengo to Napoleon Bonaparte.
5. A sheep was born on 5th July 1996 and was the first animal to be cloned from an adult cell. She lived for six years and has been called the world's most famous sheep. What was the name given to this animal?

Answer: Dolly

Dolly was born to three mothers: an egg was taken from one ewe, DNA was provided by another and a third ewe carried the embryo to term. As for the name "Dolly" - one of the scientists who cloned this animal gave the following reason for choosing it - "Dolly is derived from a mammary gland cell and we couldn't think of a more impressive pair of glands than Dolly Parton's".
Peng Peng is a sheep cloned in China in 2011 without the use of a laboratory - HMC - handmade cloning.
6. In 1991 in Little Rock, Arkansas (USA), a little girl was on her way to a music lesson with her mother when she spotted two young cats in the piano-teacher's garden. One of them, with white paws, jumped up into the girl's arms. The family adopted this little stray and gave it the name of Socks. It became famous throughout the world when the young girl's father was voted in as President of the United States and it became the White House cat. Which President had Socks as a pet?

Answer: Bill Clinton

Socks won international fame during Bill Clinton's presidency. When the Clintons acquired a Labrador Retriever, life became difficult for Socks. He did not get along with the ebullient and frisky dog, so the two animals had to be kept in separate quarters. However, this arrangement couldn't continue in the much-smaller house which the family occupied after Bill Clinton left office. Socks was looked after, for the rest of his life, by Clinton's secretary Betty Currie. In February 2009, cat lovers everywhere were saddened by the death of Socks.

He had to be put to sleep, at the grand old age of roughly 18 years, because he had developed cancer of the jaw.
7. If you go to the southern end of the George IV Bridge in Edinburgh (Scotland), you can see a statue of a Skye Terrier who was supposed to have kept vigil over his master's grave for 14 years during the 19th century. What is the name of this faithful, little dog?

Answer: Greyfriars Bobby

It has been thought that this story of the loyal, little dog was fabricated by the caretaker of the churchyard where Bobby's master was buried, because it made a lovely story for the tourists and that he would, therefore, benefit from the tips which they would give him. Be that as it may, the legend is still with us. James Bondeson, who published a biography of Bobby in 2011, stated "It won't ever be possible to debunk the story of Greyfriars Bobby - he's a living legend, the most faithful dog in the world, and bigger than all of us."
8. On 6th June 2007 an eagle-owl swooped down over an Olympic stadium, when the Finnish national football team was playing against Belgium, and settled on the cross-bar of the goal. The game was held up for several minutes. Do you know what nickname was given to this bird?

Answer: Bubi

After Finland won the match, Bubi became the team's mascot and they became known as the "Huuhkajat" (the Finnish word for "eagle-owls"). An association of journalists gave Bubi the "Helsinki Resident of the Year" award. This is a prestigious prize which is awarded annually.

The head of this association, Pasi Tuohimaa, said, "It was a unanimous decision. Bubi promoted Finnish football much more efficiently than our team's scoreless draws here and there".
9. Here is part of an epitaph - engraved on the headstone of a horse's tomb (with the animal's name omitted): "Here lies ______ the charger ridden by the Duke of Wellington the entire day at the Battle of Waterloo. Born 1806. Died 1836." Can you find the horse's name in the following list?

Answer: Copenhagen

Copenhagen's career as a racing horse wasn't a great success but as a war horse he was completely fearless and undeterred by the gunfire and noises of battle. He was the Duke of Wellington's favourite horse of whom he said, "There may have been many faster horses, no doubt many handsomer, but for bottom and endurance I never saw his fellow." This was a great compliment from a man who was an expert horseman and who owned a string of eight battle chargers. Marengo was Napoleon Bonaparte"s horse. It was captured by the British and outlived Napoleon by eight years. Magnolia was one of General Washington's horses. Palomo was the main horse of Simon Bolivar.
10. One of London Zoo's most-famous and memorable inhabitants was a gorilla who arrived at the zoo in November 1947. He was a great celebrity during the 1960s and 70s. There is a bronze statue of him near the entrance to the zoo. Do you know what name was given to this animal?

Answer: Guy

This name was chosen because Guy arrived at the zoo on Guy Fawkes' Day. He was a massive animal, weighing approximately 240kg with a frightening appearance but with a very gentle nature. He died in 1978, at the age of 30, from a heart attack during an operation on his infected teeth.
