Hint

How can you tell? Hint

Question 8 of 10

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Master Shifu is a grey-coated red panda from the "Kung Fu Panda" franchise. The red panda is also called the red cat-bear. With that in mind, which of these animals is actually a relative of the red panda/red cat-bear?

Answer: Weasel

Oddly enough, the red panda is not related to the giant panda in any way whatsoever. It was once believed to be related to the raccoon or even the bear, however, though this was later disproved. Later research indicated the animal was more closely related to the weasel, and is part of the Musteloidea family.
2. A wise old tortoise, who chose Po as the Dragon Warrior, and founded Kung Fu itself, was named Grand Master Oogway. Master Oogway was not simply a tortoise, but a specific species of tortoise, which is from the Spanish word for "tortoise". Which tortoise (also the name of an archipelago of islands), was he?

Answer: Galapagos tortoise

The Galapagos tortoise is one of the largest reptiles in the world (ranked 13th by size), as well as one of the longest living vertebrates, reaching life-spans well over a hundred years. One tortoise in captivity reached 170 years of age! The Galapagos tortoise is from the Spanish word for tortoise (galapago).

The Galápagos Islands were named after this species of tortoise that was found there.
3. One of the members of the Furious Five is Master Tigress, a South China tiger. That species was thought to be extinct in the wild in 1996. With that, efforts to reintroduce these tigers into the wild began in the early 2000s, and Gus Van Dyk coined a new word for such an effort in relation to these tigers in 2003. What is the word he coined for the reintroduction of a captive species to the wild?

Answer: Rewilding

Gus Van Dyk, in 2003, tried to find the best translation of a certain Chinese word, relating to the reintroduction efforts of the south China tiger, and settled on the word "rewilding". The word, though it was first used in relation to the "Save China's Tigers" rewilding project, became widely used for many other reintroduction projects of all sorts of species.
4. Master Monkey is also a Kung Fu Master of the Furious Five. He is a golden langur. The golden langur is also called Gee's golden langur. But why is the langur sometimes called "Gee's"?

Answer: It was named after its discoverer

Gee's golden langur was discovered by E. P. Gee in the 1950s, and can be found in the Black Mountains of Bhutan as well as a small part of Assam, India. Though it wasn't until the '50s that science knew about the golden langur, it had been a sacred creature to Himalayan people much longer.
5. The green tree viper is the specific species of Master Viper, another member of the Furious Five in the "Kung Fu Panda" series. The green tree viper's scientific name was named after a Norwegian herpetologist. With that in mind, what is the scientific name of the green tree viper?

Answer: Trimeresurus stejnegeri

The green tree viper, also known as the bamboo viper or Chinese tree viper, is a venomous species found in much of China and other neighboring Asian countries. The scientific name is in honor of the Norwegian born American herpetologist who was involved with the Smithsonian Institution for over 60 years.

His name was Leonhard Hess Stejneger, and although he was involved with many species, including some birds and seals, he was most well-known as working with reptiles and amphibians.
6. In "Kung Fu Panda 2", Po the Panda is carried around by Master Crane, who is a black-necked crane. The neck is obviously black on the black-necked crane, but there is more than just the neck that is black on the species. Not using the picture necessarily (the Demoiselle crane is actually the one pictured here), what other part of the black-necked crane is black, making it stand out from its close relative, the common crane?

Answer: Tail

The black-necked crane is actually very similar in appearance to the common crane, though there are a few more black features. Not only is the neck black, the head is also, as is the tail, which distinguishes it from the gray tail of the common crane. The rest of the bird is not white, but rather gray. The crest of the head is bald and red.
7. Master Thundering Rhino died near the beginning of "Kung Fu Panda 2" when he was attacked by a weapon that went through his hammer, which was supposedly invincible. He was a Javan rhinoceros, a critically endangered species found throughout some Asian islands such as Java and Sumatra. The picture here, however, is not actually of a Javan rhinoceros. How can you tell?

Answer: The Javan rhino only has one horn

The Javan rhinoceros is one of five extant rhinos, and is smaller than its relative the Indian rhinoceros (though not as small as the black rhinoceros). It also has a horn smaller than most other species of rhinos, and some species, such as the one pictured, have more than one horn.
8. Master Storming Ox was a character from "Kung Fu Panda 2" who was imprisoned after Master Shen attacked Gongmen City. He is simply an ox, though those in Australia, New Zealand, and India might know the ox by a different name. In those countries mentioned, by what other name is the ox known?

Answer: Bullock

The ox is used as a draft animal, pulling carts, carrying yokes, etc. In some parts of the world, such as Australia, New Zealand, and India, the animal is known as a bullock (the term was certainly new to me). Typically oxen are yoked in pairs (though multiple pairs can be used to carry heavy loads).
9. Another Gongmen City Kung Fu Master is a reptile, the largest reptile in the world. With that in mind, what could possibly have been his name?

Answer: Master Croc

Master Croc is a saltwater crocodile, also known as the saltie, estuarine crocodile, or Indo-Pacific crocodile. The species is not at all endangered, and can be found in saltwater throughout southern Asia and Oceania (not to say it cannot be found in other locations as well).
10. The main enemy in "Kung Fu Panda 2" was Lord Shen, an Indian peafowl with leucism (similar to albinism, except that it is caused by a reduction of all skin pigments, whereas albinism is just the reduction of melanin). Like other species of peafowl, the one pictured here is showing off its plumage. Which gender of the Indian peafowl has such beautiful feathers?

Answer: Adult males

The male of the peafowl is typically the one with such plumage, and the female is less vibrant and feathery. Like many other bird species, the reason for the male having such plumage is for mating. The female is attracted to these beautiful displays, and typically, when two birds fight for one female, the one with better feathers gets the girl.
