Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The most potent weapon for many snakes is their venom. Responsible for nearly 60% of snake-bite deaths in Australia, what snake measures five feet on average and as its name seems to imply is common in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria?

Answer: Eastern brown snake

First described taxonomically in 1854, the eastern brown snake is the second-most venomous land snake and populations have also been found in New Guinea. Their coloring varies from pale brown to much darker shades and their bites are especially dangerous to cats and dogs as they typically have more severe neurotoxic symptoms.
2. Part of the 'big four' snake species of India, this snake averages just three feet in length. Generally black in color with 40 white stripes, which snake's most common meal is other snakes within its genus?

Answer: Common krait

The common krait is a member of the genus Bungarus which has 15 species throughout Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent. The common krait is nocturnal and it is responsible for more snakebites than any other species in India. Unfortunately the snake's bite has been said to feel like that of a mosquito or ant and many victims do not immediately get medical care without which one can die within five hours.
3. Our next deadly snake is distributed widely in nearly all mainland sub-Saharan African countries. Averaging 40 inches in length and with two distinct dark bands on its head, which snake generally does not actively forage but rather ambushes prey as it accidentally passes close by?

Answer: Puff adder

The puff adder is scientifically named Bitis arietans meaning 'striking violently'. The species has also been found on the Arabian peninsula in both Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Generally a docile species, the puff adder is an expert at using camouflage as cover.

Their long fangs contribute to high yields of venom when they bite and the species accounts for more snakebite fatalities than any other in Africa.
4. Common with snake charmers, our next deadly snake is a protected species in its country. With a scientific name of Naja naja, what snake has a distinctive hood that often has two false eyes that can confuse prey?

Answer: Indian cobra

The Indian cobra has featured on heraldic symbols for eight different states of India. Other species of cobra are also native to India and include the King Cobra which is the longest venomous snake in the world. In the short story "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" within "The Jungle Book" by Rudyard Kipling the villains Nag and Nagaina (the Hindi words for male and female snake) are cobras.
5. Our next snake is definitely one that you do not want to be bitten by. Not only is it the most venomous snake in the world, it has the most toxic venom of any reptile. What is this snake that lives in remote, arid areas of Australia and surprisingly due to its lethality will generally avoid conflict?

Answer: Inland taipan

The inland taipan is also known as the western taipan or fierce snake and it was first described in 1879. Oddly no other major data was recorded on the species until 1972. One bite from an inland taipan has the lethality to kill 100 adults and if untreated can result in death in just 30 minutes.
6. Our next snake is the most widely distributed of the quiz being found in Hawaii, Peru, New Zealand and in much of the Indian Ocean. What are these snakes with elongated bodies, paddle-like tails and modified nostrils for aquatic life?

Answer: Sea snakes

There are 69 species of sea snake with many of them having extremely potent venom. The various species typically live the majority of their life in the warm waters of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Interestingly, sea snakes do not drink saltwater but rely on rainwater on the surface of sea water for drinking. The yellow-bellied sea snake is the most venomous of the sea snake species.
7. This next snake is very adaptable as it has been known to live in trees, the savanna, rocky slopes and even forests. Measuring 10 feet in length on average, what snake inhabits southern and eastern Africa and features in the nickname of retired NBA star Kobe Bryant?

Answer: Black mamba

The size, aggression and toxicity of its venom makes the black mamba a very dangerous snake. Black mambas are diurnal and prey on small birds, bushbabies and the hyrax and can move at speeds of 10mph over short distances.
8. While the first seven snakes had deadly skins these next three are non-venomous. Which snake utilizes Batesian mimicry to confuse predators into thinking it is the venomous coral snake?

Answer: Milk snake

It is believed that milk snakes obtained their name because they would suck milks from cow udders. This is considered a scientific myth although milk snakes have been known to inhabit barns and other areas near cows. Milk snakes are typically around 3 1/2 feet in length and their three band coloring has red touching black distinguishing it from the venomous coral snake that has red touching yellow.
9. This next snake is one of the heaviest and longest snake species on Earth. What is this snake found in the swamps and slow moving streams of South America ranging from Colombia to Paraguay?

Answer: Green anaconda

The green anaconda is found throughout the Amazon River basin and they are able to stay nearly completely submerged with just their eyes, nostrils and a small part of their head above water. There are unverified reports of the green anaconda reaching over 30 feet but their average verified size is about 16 feet.
10. Our final snake of the quiz is native to Southeast Asia but it is also a common pet and is considered an invasive species in the Florida Everglades. What is this constricting snake that reaches a length of 15 feet on average in the wild?

Answer: Burmese python

The Burmese python is semi-aquatic and like many snakes also has the ability to climb trees. Burmese pythons typically feed on small birds and mammals and their bodies change considerably when ingesting large prey. The Burmese python is a member of the python family of snakes that includes the reticulated python which is the longest snake and reptile in the world.
