Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Scots have a belief that seeing a strange black cat on your porch brings something with it. What is it Blackie brings?

Answer: Prosperity

Not all superstitions about black cats bode evil. This bad luck stuff
is mostly unique to the USA. In England and Asia, black cats are
usually believed to bestow blessings. You name it; wealth, longevity,
power, love, health, and cream cheese, all lie within the bounty of
the black cat! Well....... maybe not.
2. In England, a black cat in the home bestows a special gift on the women of the house. What do the gals get?

Answer: many male admirers

The actual verse goes: "Wherever the cat of the house is black, the
lasses of lovers will have no lack". The reason for this rhyme has
something to do with the way tomcats will gather around a house
harboring a female cat in season.
3. There is a superstition that if you dream of a black cat at Christmas something bad is in the offing. What?

Answer: a serious illness

However, should you happen to dream of black cats at Christmas, the
illness may be avoided and the curse removed. Simply bury the tail of
a black cat by your doorstep and all within will be protected from
sickness. Good to know.
4. If a black cat enters your home, what does folklore advise you do to ward off any bad luck?

Answer: treat the cat as a welcome guest

It was thought that treating Blackie kindly would get you on good
terms with his master, the devil and the devil would leave you alone.
I wonder what God thinks of this accommodation?
5. Edward Topsell, an English naturalist (1572-1625), came up with a rather bizarre cure for eye pain and blindness involving black cats. Which one was the medical breakthrough?

Answer: burn the head of a black cat and sprinkle the ashes into both eyes thrice daily

This is what happens when you let English naturalists and quiz writers
practice medicine. Though doctors of the times probably would have
thought all four were cures for something. My resource book for this
quiz was "The Quintessential Cat" by Roberta Altman.
