The Pet Rat Race Trivia Quiz

So maybe it's not such a 'rat race' when your food and shelter is provided, and your worst competition is the rat snuggling next to you in your fuzzy hammock. But that doesn't mean you don't deserve your own quiz, does it?

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When crows congregate we call it a murder, and when porcupines pal up we call it a prickle. What might you call a roundup of rats (or mice)?

Answer: a mischief

If I had my way, I'd use all four of those interchangeably since rats love to squeak, bother and scrabble as well as they love to make mischief! However, mischief is the answer.
2. Rats, like humans, can suffer from a variety of ailments. Which of the following are common medical issues with pet rats?

Answer: tumors, obesity, overgrown incisors

In the wild, rats with teeth that don't match up aren't able to grind the teeth down. The overgrown teeth will ultimately pierce the tissues of the mouth and head, and kill the rat. In pet rats, however, mis-matched (maloccluded) teeth can be regularly trimmed down by a veterinarian or an experienced owner, and the rat can live a full life.
3. I think I'm ready to start my own mischief! Where do I find my rats?

Answer: a responsible breeder or a shelter

If you get your rat from a pet store or on Craigslist, you often won't know what kind of pet you're getting. Is he well socialized? Could she be pregnant? Was his/her mama snake food? If you take the time to find a good breeder or if you adopt from a shelter, you'll have a much more reliable pet!
4. Sometimes rats are like kids: they get into trouble, make messes, and play rough-looking games with their friends! Which of these impish behaviours are rats never going to display?

Answer: rude belches

Rats can neither burp nor vomit- their body isn't built for it. Since they can't vomit, rats have evolved to be wary of new foods. They'll eat just a little and if they get sick, they'll never touch the food again.
5. Domesticated pet rats (or 'fancy' rats) come in many different varieties of shape and colour. How would you describe a rat who has large round ears placed low on the head?

Answer: a Dumbo

Rats with this body type are called Dumbos, after the Disney elephant. While their prominent ears don't enable them to fly, they certainly make them adorable!
6. I put a lot of effort into my rats and I don't expect them to just sit there and look cute- they should DO something! Which of the following can I train my rats to do?

Answer: come to me when I call

Rats can easily be trained to scurry right to your call, once they learn to associate your voice with a treat!

Never mind the chocolate chips and ratatouille- in fact, don't put ranging ratties and food in the same room unless you like your food pre-gnawed!
7. In any group of rats there is always an autocRAT; his squeaks are the law, and lesser rats must make way or risk his wRATh! What might one call this dominant rat?

Answer: Alpha rat

We would call the dominant rat the 'Alpha' rat. The Alpha rat can be male or female (female and male rats are generally kept in separate cages).
8. In the process of sniffing around your soda can for treats, Miss GnawsAlot has tipped the can over and now she's covered in sugary gunk. She REALLY needs a bath. You're going to make the experience as quick and pleasant as you can, but she's very afraid of baths! Assuming she is a well-socialized rat from a responsible breeder, what is she LEAST likely to do when you bathe her?

Answer: try to bite

Rats that are afraid will often try to escape the situation by running away. If they can't escape, they will probably squeak loudly to express their disapproval, and they might defecate out of fear. However, a well-socialized rat which is bred from a long line of rats with low aggression should not try to bite.
9. Many rats can alternate between fuzzy little whirlwinds and lumps on a log, but one segment of the population is more prone to be lazy, squishy, and cuddly. Of the choices below, which rat would be most likely to fit that description?

Answer: an older male rat

As a rule, males are more laid-back than females and older rats are more mellow than young ones. Nevertheless there are still plenty of exceptions to the rule: some little girl rats are lazy putty in your hand while some old boys are squirmy hellions who want to explore, not cuddle!
10. Keeping pet rats can be a lot of work, as well as a lot of fun. As a rat owner, what should you be doing EVERY DAY?

Answer: playing with them outside of the cage

Rats should have a minimum of an hour's playtime outside of their cage every day. Of course, more is better and the more time you spend with them the more you'll bond!
