Answer: They are the smallest of the subspecies.

3. What do western lowland gorillas eat?

Answer: Fruit, leaves and insects.

Gorilla gorilla gorilla eats fruit, foliage and, sometimes, ants and termites. They are primarily herbivorous and the proportion of fruit in their diet is higher than in other gorilla subspecies.
4. In which of the following countries can western lowland gorillas NOT be found in the early twenty-first century?

Answer: Zambia

They can also currently be found in the Republic of the Congo, Angola, the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
5. What is the main type of habitat in which western lowland gorillas live?

Answer: Rainforest and swamp forest.

G. gorilla gorilla also lives in riverine forests, brush, clearing and forest edges, and abandoned farming fields. Rainforest and swamp forest are their primary habitats. It has been observed that they generally avoid human settlements and areas of human activity.
6. What form of locomotion do western lowland gorillas generally use?

Answer: Quadripedal (knuckle-walking).

They can move around bipedally for short periods, but due to their pelvis structure this will become painful after a short time. Gorillas in general are too large to move arboreally.
7. How long is the gestation period of western lowland gorillas?

Answer: Just under nine months.

Female western lowland gorillas reach sexual maturity at around 8 or 9 years of age and produce one infant after a gestation period of almost nine months.
8. Have western lowland gorillas been observed using tools?

Answer: Yes - both in the wild and in captivity.

A western lowland gorilla has been observed using a tree branch to to ascertain water depth in a national park in the Republic of the Congo and G. gorilla gorilla individuals in captivity have been observed using buckets to collect water.
9. Since 2007, the status of the western lowland gorilla has been classed as which of these according to the IUCN Red List system?

Answer: They are critically endangered (CR).

Although G. gorilla gorilla has the highest population, by far (ca. 300,000 in the wild as of the end of 2018 according to the IUCN Red List), of the gorilla subspecies, it is still considered critically endangered. This is due to how rapidly the population has decreased across the last several decades.
10. What are the main threats to the wild population of western lowland gorillas?

Answer: Habitat loss, poaching and disease.

Deforestation for timber, the creation of farmland and the creation of other human infrastructure is a major threat. Poaching, both for trophies and for bushmeat, is also a threat. Ebola has caused major losses of population among western lowland gorillas, in which it has a 90% mortality rate.

They are also susceptible to SIV (Simian Immunodeficiency Virus), malaria, and adult males are prone to some forms of heart disease.
