Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Are baby penguins born without feathers?

Answer: No

Some babies are never born at all because predators eat them while they are still in their eggs. Others may be ripped apart after they hatch by predators.
2. Penguins have many predators in the water while they fill their bellies. Which of the following is not a threat to have penguin as a meal?

Answer: Squid

On land, they can get eaten by foxes, wild cats, and certain types of predator birds. They are protective though and will gather in bunches to keep predators from singling one out. If the mother penguin gets eaten when she is trying to get food for the baby, not only will she die, but so will her offspring.
3. Which of the parenting Emperor penguins is always present when the eggs hatch?

Answer: Father

The father holds and incubates the egg while the mother penguin is out looking for food. He holds a white secretion that he regurgitates that feeds the baby until the mother gets back to feed the baby. The father goes without food outside of snow for 2-3 months. Once the mother returns, the father goes to get food.
4. Which of the following does not endanger penguins?

Answer: Other aggressive penguins

Penguins are peaceful creatures. However, like most animals, there are predators that are above them on the food chain and will attack and eat them. The worst threat however is man indirectly by polluting the water and air.
5. How do penguins mate?

Answer: Male on top

Penguins have a difficult time mating because of how their body is shaped. Their bodies are compared to bottles and you know it's really hard to keep a bottle on top of another one. So, when penguins decide to mate, the female must keep still while the male gets on top. If the female moves, the male will fall. As a result, mating only lasts a few seconds.
6. What is another name for the African Penguin?

Answer: Blackfoot Penguin

They live on the coast of South Africa and in Namibia. They have a black U shape on their neck that is upside down. They make a loud braying sound and are known to build their nests under bushes or on sandy beaches.
7. The short, dense feathers of penguins, and the oil coating the feathers makes them waterproof.

Answer: True

Penguins are sea animals as much as land animals and the different types of feather they have make a totally waterproof covering which helps them both to swim and to slide around on the ice, sometimes even on their bellies.
8. Which of the following types of penguins is the smallest?

Answer: Rockhopper penguins

Rockhopper penguins are the smallest of the options and are usually about 20 inches tall. The emperor penguin can grow to 48 inches and at times a little taller.
9. How does the male penguin find his mate and egg when he returns from the ocean for feeding?

Answer: Sound

Before the male leaves to go find food and switches the baby penguin to the mother, they communicate by sound so that when the male returns, the chick can call out the particular call and the male penguin can find and feed his offspring.
10. Is a large group of penguins called a rookery?

Answer: Yes

It can also be known as a colony.
