Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Apus apus
Answer: Common swift
Swifts spend most of their life, up to twenty years, in the air. The family name comes from the Greek "apous" meaning "without feet". From a distance they look black, although they are actually more of a dark brown colour. The small patch of paler feathers under the chin isn't visible from a distance.
Their legs are so short t hat the birds can barely walk.
2. Vulpes vulpes
Answer: Red fox
The red fox is mainly a nocturnal animal. It is an omnivore and will survive on almost any type of food. It frequently sleeps in the open, keeping warm by wrapping its tail around itself like a blanket.
These animals are found nearly everywhere across the northern hemisphere and have adapted to cities, which provide a ready source of food for them.
3. Troglodytes troglodytes
Answer: Northern wren
This mouthful of a scientific name describes one of the smallest birds in the world. You might catch a glimpse of a wren scuttling around your garden - the erect tail is a way of identifying the otherwise nondescript little brown bird.
4. Panthera tigris tigris
Answer: Bengal tiger
The Bengal tiger is a sub-species of the tiger family, Panther tigris. The Bengal is native to Asia, although its range has shrunk to parts of India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and some parts of China. It is among the largest of the tiger species.
5. Milvus milvus
Answer: Red kite
The red kite became extinct in England, Ireland and Scotland and nearly so in Wales. It has since been reintroduced and is making a comeback. They make a magnificent sight, wheeling around in the sky.
6. Perdix perdix
Answer: Grey partridge
The grey partridge is a member of the pheasant family. It is native to most parts of Europe and is an imported species to North America. It has also established itself in the southern hemisphere including in South Africa and New Zealand.
7. Mephitis mephitis
Answer: Striped skunk
The striped skunk is found in most areas of North America including all of the USA, parts of Canada and Mexico. At birth, the baby skunk is blind and deaf.
The main predators of the skunk are the great horned owl and the red-tail hawk.
8. Carduelis carduelis
Answer: Goldfinch
The C. carduelis is specifically the European goldfinch. The goldfinch is a brightly coloured bird with a red mask which is more clearly defined in the male than the female. The flash of yellow on its wings is what gives the bird its name.
9. Bubo bubo
Answer: Eurasian eagle owl
The Eurasian eagle owl's body can be up to twenty-eight inches long (about three-quarters of a meter), with a six foot (nearly two meter) wingspan. In captivity the owl can live up to forty years. The Eurasian eagle owl can prey on animals up to the size of a small deer.
10. Equus hemionus hemionus
Answer: Mongolian wild ass
The Mongolian wild ass is one of four wild ass species including the Equus hemionus kiang from Tibet, Equus hemionus onager from Iran and Equus hemionus khur from India. The equus name at the beginning of the scientific name should have pointed towards the animal being a member of the horse family.
