Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There are five different types of bird feet. One is zygodactyl, where two toes face forward and two face backward. Which of the following is an example of a bird with this type of foot?

Answer: parrots

Along with zygodactyl, the other four types of bird feet are anisodactyl, heterodactyl, syndactyl and pamprodactyl. Anisodactyl is the most common type, with three toes forward and one going back.

Zygodactyl feet are used to climb tree trucks. Woodpeckers and cuckoos also have this type of foot.
2. Which of the following are the largest muscles in a bird?

Answer: pectorals

The pectorals are located in the bird's breast. They help with the wings' downstroke. Birds have about 175 muscles.
3. Do birds have scales?

Answer: Yes

Birds have scales on their feet and ankles. The scales are made of keratin, as are their beaks and feathers.
4. What do the crop and gizzard help with?

Answer: digestion

The crop is an expanded part of the esophagus and holds food. After leaving the crop, the food passes through the stomach, and then into the gizzard. The gizzard grinds up the food. Some birds swallow small stones to help with the grinding.
5. Like humans, birds have how many chambers in their hearts?

Answer: four

Along with birds, most mammals and some reptiles have four-chambered hearts. The heart has two atria and two ventricles. The ventricles pump the blood through the body.
6. In humans, the vocal organ is called the larynx. What is the bird equivalent called?

Answer: syrinx

The syrinx is located at the base of the trachea, where it splits into the lungs. Because of this location, some birds can make more than one noise at a time. The syrinx also helps some birds to mimic humans.
7. What is an operculum?

Answer: a flap that covers the nasal cavity

The operculum protects the nasal cavity from getting clogged. Diving birds use them to keep out water. Birds that feed on flowers use them to keep out pollen.
8. All birds have some hollow bones.

Answer: False

Although most birds have some hollow bones, not all of them do. Some birds that only have solid bones include flightless birds, such as penguins and ostriches. Some people think there is a link between hollow bones and the ability to fly.
9. Birds are the only animals with vertebrates to have a fused collarbone. What is this commonly known as?

Answer: wishbone

The proper name for the wishbone is the furcula, which is Latin for "little fork". It helps birds to be able to fly. It is known as a wishbone because when it taken out of a bird that has been eaten, two people will break it in half while making a wish. The person with the larger side gets the wish.
10. Where on a bird is a comb located?

Answer: top of the head

Combs are fleshy crests that appear on some birds, such as chickens, turkeys, and pheasants. They come in a few colors, including red and black. They can be eaten.
