Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Avahi cleesei : One would usually associate pythons with snakes but John Cleese gave his name to which of these residents of Madagascar?

Answer: Lemur

This woolly lemur, also known as the Bemaraha woolly lemur, was discovered in 1990 and officially named in 2005. It was named after Cleese due to his love of lemurs and work for their protection. The Monty Python team have also had asteroids named after them.
2. Ptiloris victoriae : The Victoria's riflebird is an Australian bird of paradise discovered in 1848. Which famous Victoria was it named after?

Answer: Queen Victoria

The riflebird is native to Queensland and was discovered by Scottish naturalist John Macgillivray.

Another animal to be named after royalty is the King Charles breed of spaniel named after the English King Charles II and now also known as the English Toy Spaniel to distinguish it from the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

In royal terms, one of the heavyweights of the animal naming world is Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand. She has a swallow, crab, prawn, bee, moth, dinosaur, two shrimps and a kamptozoan all named after her. (Source : Wikipedia)
3. Phialella zappai : Frank Zappa could hardly have been described as spineless so why did he have a jellyfish named after him?

Answer: He had wanted a jellyfish to be named after him

Zappa had been quoted as saying that there was nothing he'd like better than having a jellyfish named after him. This was music to the ears of fan and marine researcher Ferdinando Boero who set out to find a new jellyfish in order to meet his hero. It worked.

Zappa is quite prolific on the animal naming circuit having also had a spider, a fish and a fossil worm named after him.
4. Equus grevyi : Nineteenth Century French president Jules Grévy was gifted an animal from Abyssinia which acquired his name. What sort of animal was it?

Answer: Zebra

Grévy's Zebra is also known as the Imperial Zebra. It is native to Ethiopia and Kenya and is the largest of zebra species.
5. Psephophorus terrypratchetti : Which fossilised animal was named after British fantasy author Terry Pratchett? The answer is perfectly logical if you're familiar with his Discworld series.

Answer: Turtle

In the Discworld novels, the World (in the shape of a disc) is borne by four elephants standing on a turtle called Great A'Tuin. Psephophorus terrypratchetti was discovered in New Zealand in 1995 and named by Robert Kohler.
6. Agathidium bushi : I can't help wondering whether it was a Democrat who named which kind of creature after George W. Bush?

Answer: Slime-mold beetle

Beetles from the same genus have been named Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Pocahontas and Darth Vader. Other beetles to bear the names of the famous include Anophthalmus hitleri, Agra katewinsletae and Agra schwarzeneggeri but I'm not aware of any being named after John, Paul, George or Ringo.

Continuing the Star Wars theme, Yoda (parasitic isopod) and Chewbacca (wasp) have also had animals named after them whilst Harrison Ford can claim an ant (Pheidole harrisonfordi) and a spider (Calponia harrisonfordi).
7. Campsicnemius charliechaplini : This fly was named because of a similarity to the great comedian Charlie Chaplin. Do you know why?

Answer: It becomes bow-legged when dead

Other comedians to have animals named in their honour include Laurel and Hardy (Baeturia hardyi / Baeturia laureli - cicadas) and Stephen Colbert (Agaporomorphus colberti - a beetle).
8. Sylvilagus palustris hefneri : As befits his reputation, Hugh Hefner has a species of which animal named after him?

Answer: Rabbit

The connection, of course, is through the famous (or infamous) "Playboy" bunny girls. This endangered rabbit, also known as the Lower Keys marsh rabbit, is native to Florida, USA.
9. Bufonaria borisbeckeri : The German tennis player Boris Becker was pretty fast on court which makes it quite ironic that what type of animal should be named after him?

Answer: Sea Snail

Compared to those in the entertainment industry, sportsmen and women have been under represented in species naming. There is however a spider named after Dizzy Dean (Mastophora dizzydeani) to represent the world of baseball.
10. Preseucoila imallshookupis : This may not be the King of the Jungle, in fact it's a wasp, but can you name the king after whom it was named?

Answer: Elvis Presley

Other singers to have animals named after them include Sting (Hyla stingi - a tree frog), Jerry Garcia (Cryptocercus garciai - a wood roach), Neil Young (Myrmekiaphila neilyoungi - a spider) and Roy Orbison (Orectochilus orbisonorum - a beetle).
