The Ultimate Drop a Letter 1 Quiz | Drop a Letter

We shall be working our way down from a 6-letter word to a 2-letter word, then up again to a 7-letter word. Since the easiest way to crack these puzzles may be to go work back from the 2-letter word I've tried to make that as hard as possible to do.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. An aircraft company originally associated with Seattle.

Answer: Boeing

I'd always assumed that Boeing was an artificially constructed company name, but in fact the company was built by William Boeing. When the company's headquarters were moved to Chicago, the people of Seattle might have said "Boeing, Boeing, Gone". Or not.
2. An onomatopoeic word associated with the release of a coiled spring.

Answer: Boing

'Boing' is also both a Turner Broadcasting Channel and (when paired with an exclamation mark) a brand of soft drink.
3. A portable device for smoking tobacco or other substances, similar to a hookah.

Answer: Bong

I'm sure many of us remember Kevin Philips-Bong, the Slightly Silly party candidate in the Monty Python sketch 'Election Night Special'. He went down to ignominious defeat at the hands of Tarquin Fin-tim-lin-bin-whin-bim-lim-bus-stop-F'tang-F'tang-Olé-Biscuitbarrel.
(Easy for you to say!)
4. This suggests a muddy swamp.

Answer: Bog

Bogs are associated with peat and moss, and thus typical of wetlands in Ireland. It is a macabre side-note to bogs that they can preserve human bodies by mummifying them, so some of our best views into ancient civilizations come from examining corpses rescued from bogs.
5. If you don't know this two-sport athlete you don't know Diddley!

Answer: Bo

Bo Jackson's sporting exploits are legendary. He competed professionally at both baseball and American football. Indeed, to see him run UP a wall after catching a baseball, or break a baseball bat over his helmet can never be forgotten. He was the best athlete I've ever seen.
6. Equally useable on a violin or at an archery tournament.

Answer: Bow

Many people will have heard the phrase "to draw a bow at a venture", but until writing this puzzle I'd never thought about what it meant precisely, or how it came to mean what it does. It is from the King James version of the Bible and means to take an unlikely shot on an off-chance.
7. A painful punch or what we associate with the action of the wind.

Answer: Blow

"Blow winds and crack your cheeks" is from King Lear's mad speech in William Shakespeare's 'King Lear'.
8. This word is a preposition that suggests 'underneath' and when linked with belts it also implies underhandedness.

Answer: Below

'Below the belt' is a metaphor from boxing, while 'below stairs' suggests the gallery of servants at an Edwardian stately home such as TV's titular Downton Abbey.
9. This is a word associated with the noise produced by a bull (or possibly an elephant) as well as the last name of a Canadian/American author.

Answer: Bellow

If humans bellow it suggests an unreasonably loud noise perhaps associated with pain or anger. Stentor (who gave his name to 'stentorian') was a Homeric hero who specialized in producing such a loud noise.
10. Expand the last word to produce a domestic tool and something used to produce a supply of air, often to expand a fire.

Answer: Bellows

Bellows are often used in iron-working but also domestically to expand a fire. It is a relatively rare grammatical phenomenon in that it only exists in a plural form.
