Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first word of six letters is the name of the holiday that is associated with both the crucifix and chocolate eggs.

Answer: Easter

Easter happens at a different time every year on our calendar. That's because it happens on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Vernal Equinox (first day of spring). Originally, Easter was a pagan festival celebrating the fertility goddess Oestre/Ostara, with the rabbits and eggs sharing the symbolism of fertility. But, as the Christian church was wont to do, they appropriated the calendar occurrence to line up with the celebration of Jesus Christ's crucifixion and resurrection. Whatever its origins, today's Easter is largely associated with Christianity, while the other aspects (bunnies and chocolate eggs) have become simply commercialized.
2. Drop a letter and rearrange the rest to make a word that means to look very hard at something.

Answer: Stare

Staring at someone can be very rude, but sometimes you see something so amazing or incredible that it's hard NOT to stare.
3. Drop another letter and rearrange the rest to make a word that means to give a value to something.

Answer: Rate

You can practice rating something when you get to the end of this quiz and (hopefully) rate it EXCELLENT!
4. Lose another letter and rearrange the rest to make a hot drink that sounds like a letter of the alphabet.

Answer: Tea

Tea gets its name from the type of plant that was originally used to make this yummy hot drink. Boiling hot water poured over cured tea leaves (with a little bit of honey if you're me) makes for a lovely drink.

Other types of leaves and herbs are now used to make many different flavours of tea, some with caffeine and some without.
5. Again, drop a letter and rearrange the rest to come up with the abbreviation for extraterrestrial.

Answer: Et

A terrific example of a well-known 'et' is from the movie "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial". It came out in 1982 and tells of an alien that got left behind when its ship had to take off. It makes friends with a young boy named Elliot (Henry Thomas), his sister Gertie (Drew Barrymore) and brother Michael (Robert MacNaughton). Together, they try to help 'E.T. phone home' and get rescued. E.T. was voiced by Pat Welsh.
6. Drop one last letter to leave yourself with the letter that represents Spain on international license plates.

Answer: E

In Spanish, the country of Spain is called Espaņa. If you know that, then it makes sense for them to the letter 'E'. Spain is found on the Iberian Peninsula in Europe inbetween Portugal and France.
7. Now add a letter to make a word that is the nickname of the Chicago rapid transit system (and sounds like a letter of the alphabet).

Answer: El

The 'El', also simply known as the 'L', is an 'EL'evated rapid transit system in Chicago, Illinois.
8. Add a letter and rearrange them to make a word that describes the side of something that is sheltered from the wind.

Answer: Lee

The lee of something is the sheltered (from the wind) side of something, like the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains - most of the rain and snow falls on the western side.
9. Add another letter and rearrange them to make a word that means more than one snake-like fish.

Answer: Eels

There are over 800 species of eel in the world, ranging from as short as two inches (five centimetres) to up to 13 feet (four metres) long! Those really long ones are called slender giant moray eels.

There is also one type of eel that can generate electrical charges, appropriately called an electric eel.
10. Finally, add one last letter and rearrange them to describe what you probably want to do at the end of the holidays after all your guests have left and you're overfull with holiday feasting.

Answer: Sleep

Sleep is my favourite thing to do after a filling holiday meal (once the guests have gone)! Many holidays revolve around traditions that involve meals or food of some kind... what better way to fellowship with family and friends than around the dinner table?
