Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What 9-letter word means a tendency to tell lies? (You may find it easier to solve another clue and come back to this later)

Answer: mendacity

This is rather an obscure term, admittedly. I'm not going to be mendacious, I can't say I've ever used this word or any of its derivatives before.
2. What 8-letter word is an explosive invented by Swedish chemist Alfred Nobel?

Answer: dynamite

Nitroglycerine is a major component in dynamite, but due to its volatile nature, is dangerous to handle. Gelignite was also invented by Nobel, quite by accident, which is a safer alternative to dynamite, in the sense that gelignite is moldable, safe to handle and cheaper and easier to acquire and store.
3. What 7-letter word is a service provided by an organisation, for instance?

Answer: amenity

You might have heard someone refer to the 'amenities'. An amenity, as the above states, is a service, like a pool at a gymnasium, or a gymnasium at a resort, or a resort at a theme park.
4. What 6-letter word is a resident of a prison?

Answer: inmate

Some famous prison inmates include Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman in 'The Shawshank Redemption'.
5. What 5-letter word is a fungal infection also known as athlete's foot?

Answer: tinea

Without wanting to get too graphic, ringworm is also known as tinea, and is characterised by round patches of fungal infection. Athlete's foot, or tinea pedis, quite obviously occurs on the feet.
6. What 4-letter word means tidy, organised and clean?

Answer: neat

Neat can also be used to describe quite a concentrated drink, like a whole glass of lime cordial without any water in it at all. Admittedly, I do enjoy having neat cordial. Goodness knows what that's doing to my teeth.
7. What 3-letter word is the seventh letter of the Greek alphabet?

Answer: eta

Eta, lowercase η and uppercase Η (which isn't confusing at all), is situated between zeta and theta in the Greek alphabet. If you were to capitalise eta and optionally add some full stops between the letters, you could form the initialism ETA, estimated time of arrival. It's completely up to you.
8. What 2-letters are used as the chemical symbol for tellurium?

Answer: te

Tellurium is frequently used in metallurgy, when it is combined with other metals. Some solar panels also use tellurium, leading to a large demand for the metal in these times of solar power generation and 'clean' energy.
9. Now, start adding letters. What 3-letter hot drink is perhaps the most popular beverage in the world?

Answer: tea

Hot water infused with tea leaves produces a lovely hot drink that is popular the world over. Different people like to have their tea in different ways. I, for one, prefer the classic 'milk and two sugars'.
10. What 4-letter word means tardy or behind schedule?

Answer: late

The word 'late' is synonymous with teenagers: getting up late, staying up late, handing in assignments late, turning up late to lectures... I don't know how I ever managed to get up at a reasonable hour when I was at school. Apparently there is a 7 o'clock in the morning, too.
11. What 5-letter word is the sound that a sheep might make?

Answer: bleat

I knew a sheep once. It turns out he was only after my money. One bleat, then he disappeared. He fleeced me.
12. What 6-letter word means a conflict or struggle, usually on a military level?

Answer: battle

Aside from the obvious, Battle is also a town in south-eastern England. The Battle of Hastings happened near here in 1066. If it had happened any closer, it would have been the Battle of Battle, and future students of history would be forever confused.
13. What 7-letter plural refers to stone slabs with writing on them, or medicinal pills?

Answer: tablets

Famously, in the bible, God gave Moses stone tablets atop Mount Sinai, upon which the Ten Commandments were written. What isn't as well known is that Moses only wanted some antihistamines to get rid of his cold, but God misheard him slightly.
14. What 8-letter word refers to something that is able to be expressed in words, for example?

Answer: statable

It's fairly self-explanatory, really. The definition of this word is statable. I am able to state it. Having said that, it is rather tricky to express in words.
15. What 9-letter word means 'arranges and orders in a list'?

Answer: tabulates

If you pronounce 'tabulate' slightly differently such that it changes from a verb to an adjective, you can refer to something with a flat surface. A table, for instance, is tabulate.
