Tennessee is nicknamed the Volunteer State. It provided volunteer soldiers for the War of 1812 and the Mexican War, and in the Civil War more soldiers from Tennessee fought than from any other state. (Mississippi has three sets of double letters, but DOESN'T have E's.)
