Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is a native or citizen of the United States called? In his song "God Bless the USA", Lee Greenwood states he is proud to be one.

Answer: American

The name "America" was acquired well before the original 13 colonies became a country. It is named after Amerigo Vespucci, who was an Italian explorer. After Christopher Columbus' journey in 1492, Vespucci came up with a new theory that the lands Columbus discovered were actually a continent and not part of eastern Asia. Soon after, around 1507, maps began calling the land "America".

In 1776, after gaining freedom from Britain, the Continental Congress changed the name of the "United Colonies" to the "United States of America" and its citizens became "Americans".
2. Use the last 3 letters of the previous answer as the first 3 letters in a word that is used to define a human or animal that eats the flesh of its own kind.

Answer: Cannibal

Cannibalism, or the act of humans eating other humans, dates back to the latest Ice Age. Human bone remains have been found at feast sites mixed in with other mammals from the time. During the Crusades in the late 1000s people caught in sieges resorted to cannibalism and victors sometimes ate the bodies of the vanquished.

In parts of Africa, through the centuries, humans were eaten as a means of medical remedy or to protect against certain magics. Native Americans practiced this technique as part of their religious ceremonies and various events, such as the stranding of the Donner Party, in the spread of colonization in America also led to people eating others in their group.
3. Use the last 3 letters of the previous answer as the first 3 letters in a word that is used to describe a type of writing pen that dispenses ink over a round object at its tip.

Answer: Ballpoint

The first ballpoint pen was created and sold in the 1940s. Just prior to this time, people were using fountain pens that contained ink cartridges that flowed ink to the nib where the pen deposited it on paper and the ink slowly dried. These fountain pens had taken the place of quills and ink where the quill was dipped into the ink and utilized. By 1945, the ballpoint pen had been invented by a Hungarian named Biro and companies soon patented their own version.

This type of writing instrument uses a small, rotating ball at its tip that dispenses quick-drying ink as it is moving across a surface. Marcel Bic bought the rights to the original pen from Biro and the rest, as they say, is history.
4. Use the last 3 letters of the previous answer as the first 3 letters in a word that is used to define a whole number, negative or positive, that does not contain fractions or decimals. This also includes zero.

Answer: Integer

Integers are in a category of numbers that includes positive and negative whole numbers. Zero counts as an integer but any decimal or fraction does not. A good example is if you had a jar of marbles. If you put three marbles in the jar, that would be an integer of +3. If you took two marbles out of the jar, you would represent that as -2. Since you could not take a part of a marble out, there would be no decimal or fraction.
5. Use the last 3 letters of the previous answer as the first 3 letters in a word that is used to define a small, energetic rodent with long hind legs. This animal is often kept as a pet by people.

Answer: Gerbil

Gerbils are mammals of the rodent family that originated in Asia. Like hamsters, they are often kept as pets by individuals or families. They are about six inches in length and weigh over two ounces. They have long tails, snouts, and hind legs on which they often stand. Gerbils are energetic social animals and are active during the daytime.

They love to eat seeds, grasses, and vegetables.
6. Use the last 3 letters of the previous answer as the first 3 letters in a word that is used to define a thousand million and is written as 1,000,000,000. Use the plural of the word.

Answer: Billions

In British English, a billion used to be defined as a million million but America has always deemed it to be a thousand million. In the short scale naming system it is ten to the ninth power and in the long scale system it is ten to the twelfth power.

It is from the long scale system that the name "billion" came, with "bi" representing the second power of a million. Over the centuries, the word "billions" has informally come to represent a great quantity of something as in "there are billions and billions of stars in the sky".
7. Use the last 3 letters of the previous answer as the first 3 letters in a word that is defined as the beginning of something. In the medical arena, it can be the beginning stages of an illness. In the military arena, it can mean the start of an attack.

Answer: Onset

In the early 1500s, the word "onset" was used to describe the beginning of a military assault against an enemy. By the end of that same century, the medical community had begun using it to mean the first signs or symptoms of an illness such as the plague. Lastly, the term "onset" is also used in linguistics to mean the letter or letters in a syllable that come before the first vowel.
8. Use the last 3 letters of the previous answer as the first 3 letters in a word that would be used to describe land that has been recently been colonized. It can also be utilized to describe a lawsuit where an agreement between parties has been reached.

Answer: Settled

A settlement is where people start a new town or community and it is usually in a place that was previously uninhabited. For example, the first land that was permanently settled by the English in the United States was Jamestown, Virginia in 1607. Legal settlements are where parties come to an agreement and usually involve the exchange of cash. Suits that have been settled include types such as divorce, wrongful death, fraud, false advertisement, sexual harassment, class action lawsuit.

The word "settled" can also mean to relax in a comfortable position, such as "settled on the sofa".
9. Use the last 3 letters of the previous answer as the first 3 letters in a word that defines a Bavarian piece of clothing that consists of leather shorts often worn with suspenders.

Answer: Lederhosen

Lederhosen became popular in Europe in the early 1700s when the Bavarians took traditional leather shorts and put a drop-down flap in the front. Goat or sheep skin was used by the lower classes of society while nobility favored the tan deer skin that is still commonly used today.

The invention of denim jeans by Levi Strauss in the 1870s put an end to lederhosen as everyday clothes. This unique clothing can still be seen throughout Germany in modern times at traditional festivals and events like Oktoberfest.

They are worn with long socks, white shirts, suspenders, and green felt hats.
10. Use the last 3 letters of the previous answer as the first 3 letters in a word that defines a person who works in the upper house of a parliament. In the United States, there are two of these per state.

Answer: Senator

The Senate began in Rome with the Roman Republic where members were appointed rather than elected. The United States Senate, many centuries later, was formed after the Roman idea but with the underlying principle to offset the House of Representatives. US Senators, unlike their House counterparts, have six year terms.

They have been controlled by multiple parties throughout the years. Each U.S. state has two Senators...all of whom are citizens relating to Answer #1.
