Puzzles Involving the Word "Cat"

My cat, Kwizzer, and his friend Kyle thought there weren't enough cat-themed quizzes on FunTrivia. So, at their request, here is a puzzle quiz with four of Kwizzer's favorite types of wordplay. Each answer contains or pertains to the word "cat."

Question 1 of 10
1. (Questions #1-3 are Anagram puzzles)

Although I'm not very fluent in catspeak, I know when Kwizzer - who is a bit of a '20s hepcat - says he likes something. When we watched a COMET streak across the night sky, Kwizzer said that it WAS the... (Rearrange the letters in the two all-caps words to complete this paragraph. The first word is possessive, and the second uses U.S. English.)

Answer: (Two Words, first letters "C" and "M")
Question 2 of 10
2. (Anagram)

Kwizzer must've gotten some ideas from that nature television show we saw the other evening. It was a feature about big cats, Kwizzer's distant cousins. EACH night since then, I've heard Kwizzer running like mad through THE house! He must be trying to imitate this speedy relative. (The two capital-letter words in this paragraph can be rearranged to discover the answer.)

Answer: (One Word, first letter "C")
Question 3 of 10
3. (Anagram)

It's a case of mistaken identity, I tell you! Kwizzer's no thief, and he has not been carrying out a series of ART robberies across the States. The authorities seemed particularly worried about a painting of a CRAB, I think...or maybe it was a lobster. Anyway, I can provide an alibi - wouldn't I know if Kwizzer had been having to LUG home priceless art?

Answer: (Two Words, first letters "C" and "B")
Question 4 of 10
4. (Questions #4-5 are Spoonerisms)

I think Kwizzer's fallen in love! He's been moping about ever since he saw the latest "Cat Fancy" magazine's cover model. I do have to agree, this brown-furred, blue-eyed Oriental girl is one beautiful feline. (Figure out the two words defined below, and switch their initial consonant sounds to find the right breed of cat.)

Ancient civilization whose calendar resets in 2012 + Bodies of water like the Caspian, Baltic, and Mediterranean

Answer: (One Word, first letter "S")
Question 5 of 10
5. (Spoonerism)

I haven't had any problem with rodent infestations in my house since I adopted Kwizzer. He's exceptionally good at playing this game, in which he is always the dominant aggressor. (Another spoonerism. Once again, switch the initial sounds of the words described below. This time, your answer will be two words connected by "and.")

"Welcome" place to wipe your feet + (and) + Moo-ing animals that produce milk

Answer: (Three Words, C__ and M__)
Question 6 of 10
6. (Questions #6-8 are In Other Words)

Ever since I promised Kwizzer that I'd take him on a vacation, he just won't stop pestering me about it! He really wants to see these mountains in New York, he's convinced they're named for him. After all, he does possess many FELINE TALENTS! (I have given this mountain chain a new name with the same meaning as the original. You'll need to deduce the proper synonyms for the capital-letter words to return it to its former state.)

Answer: (One Word, first letter "C")
Question 7 of 10
7. (In Other Words)

Though he mostly stays indoors, Kwizzer loves to sit and stare out the window for hours. You can just imagine his thoughts when he watches the birds playing outside! If he could, he'd be a FELINE IN THE MIDST OF THE COOING "CARRIER" BIRDS. (This rather long, all-caps phrase translates to one much shorter, if you can figure out what I've described here.)

Answer: (Four Words, C__ a__ t_ p__)
Question 8 of 10
8. (In Other Words)

The other day, Kwizzer managed to escape the house and where do you think the first place he went was? The neighbor lady's flower garden, of course. She got after him with a broom, too! Kwizzer got out of there so fast, I'm sure the encounter cost him one of his proverbial THREE-TIMES-THREE EXISTENCES.

Answer: (Two Words, first letters "N" and "L")
Question 9 of 10
9. (Questions #9-10 are Cryptic Clues)

Kwizzer is, not surprisingly, rather a spoiled baby with lots of toys. His favorites, though, are always the ones that contain a bit of this herb. (The cryptic clue that follows contains an indicator word that will tell you where to look for the answer. In this puzzle, the indicator is "initially.")

Initially, certain animals take no interest, presumably.

Answer: (One Word, first letter "C")
Question 10 of 10
10. (Cryptic Clue)

Kwizzer must be very happy and contented with my quiz so far! He's making a nice, pleasant sound right now to let me know that he likes it. (Another cryptic clue with another indicator word.)

The answer is hidden in Spurr crater.

Answer: (One Word, first letter "P")

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. (Questions #1-3 are Anagram puzzles) Although I'm not very fluent in catspeak, I know when Kwizzer - who is a bit of a '20s hepcat - says he likes something. When we watched a COMET streak across the night sky, Kwizzer said that it WAS the... (Rearrange the letters in the two all-caps words to complete this paragraph. The first word is possessive, and the second uses U.S. English.)

Answer: Cat's meow

COMET WAS = CAT'S MEOW

When something is said to be the "cat's meow" (or, "cat's whiskers"), it is excellent, outstanding, and admired. Popular slang in the 1920s, these expressions are credited to Thomas A. Dorgan (Tad Dorgan), a cartoonist in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. "Bee's knees" and "cat's pajamas" have a similar meaning.
2. (Anagram) Kwizzer must've gotten some ideas from that nature television show we saw the other evening. It was a feature about big cats, Kwizzer's distant cousins. EACH night since then, I've heard Kwizzer running like mad through THE house! He must be trying to imitate this speedy relative. (The two capital-letter words in this paragraph can be rearranged to discover the answer.)

Answer: Cheetah

EACH THE = CHEETAH

Able to run at up to 60-70 miles per hour (and reaching those speeds in only three seconds), the cheetah is the fastest land mammal. Sadly, cheetahs, who make their homes in the grasslands of Africa and Asia, have become an endangered species due to habitat loss.
3. (Anagram) It's a case of mistaken identity, I tell you!

Answer: Cat burglar

ART CRAB LUG = CAT BURGLAR

A cat burglar is so named because of their cat-like methods of sneakiness and stealth. Another defining trait of cat burglars is their mode of entry, usually high windows or even skylights - again, reminiscent of a cat with its penchant for heights.
4. (Questions #4-5 are Spoonerisms) I think Kwizzer's fallen in love! He's been moping about ever since he saw the latest "Cat Fancy" magazine's cover model. I do have to agree, this brown-furred, blue-eyed Oriental girl is one beautiful feline. (Figure out the two words defined below, and switch their initial consonant sounds to find the right breed of cat.) Ancient civilization whose calendar resets in 2012 + Bodies of water like the Caspian, Baltic, and Mediterranean

Answer: Siamese

MAYA SEAS = SIAMESE

Calling Thailand (formerly known as Siam) home, Siamese cats are one of the world's oldest breeds and are easily recognized from their blue eyes and vocal tendencies. Developing their distinctive coloring later in life, Siamese cats are born with white fur.
5. (Spoonerism) I haven't had any problem with rodent infestations in my house since I adopted Kwizzer. He's exceptionally good at playing this game, in which he is always the dominant aggressor. (Another spoonerism. Once again, switch the initial sounds of the words described below. This time, your answer will be two words connected by "and.") "Welcome" place to wipe your feet + (and) + Moo-ing animals that produce milk

Answer: Cat and mouse

MAT AND COWS = CAT AND MOUSE

To play a game of "cat and mouse" is to interact as those two creatures so often do, the cat cruelly stalking and challenging the mouse, who attempts to evade and dodge his larger opponent. To the cat, this strategy can be a form of amusement, but it's torture for the poor mouse!
6. (Questions #6-8 are In Other Words) Ever since I promised Kwizzer that I'd take him on a vacation, he just won't stop pestering me about it! He really wants to see these mountains in New York, he's convinced they're named for him. After all, he does possess many FELINE TALENTS! (I have given this mountain chain a new name with the same meaning as the original. You'll need to deduce the proper synonyms for the capital-letter words to return it to its former state.)

Answer: Catskills

"Feline talents" becomes, "Catskills."

Its highest point Slide Mountain at 4,180 ft/1,274m, the Catskill mountain range is located in southeastern New York, U.S.A. The town of Bethel, New York (located in the Catskills) was the site of the 1969 Woodstock Festival.
7. (In Other Words) Though he mostly stays indoors, Kwizzer loves to sit and stare out the window for hours. You can just imagine his thoughts when he watches the birds playing outside! If he could, he'd be a FELINE IN THE MIDST OF THE COOING "CARRIER" BIRDS. (This rather long, all-caps phrase translates to one much shorter, if you can figure out what I've described here.)

Answer: Cat among the pigeons

"Feline in the midst of the cooing 'carrier' birds" becomes, "Cat among the pigeons."

To put the "cat among the pigeons" is to stir up trouble, create disorder, and give cause for anxiety. "Cat Among the Pigeons" is also the title of a 1959 Agatha Christie novel, a Hercule Poirot mystery. Set at an upscale girls' school, the novel's "cat" turns order and routine into panic and fear by committing multiple murders.
8. (In Other Words) The other day, Kwizzer managed to escape the house and where do you think the first place he went was? The neighbor lady's flower garden, of course. She got after him with a broom, too! Kwizzer got out of there so fast, I'm sure the encounter cost him one of his proverbial THREE-TIMES-THREE EXISTENCES.

Answer: Nine lives

"Three-times-three existences" becomes, "Nine lives."

The saying about a cat having "nine lives" is of uncertain origin, but possibly relates to ancient Egypt (where nine, a "trinity of trinities," was considered an important number) and the Egyptian cat-goddess Bastet. With a cat's reputation for tenacity and landing on its feet, it is often an apt analogy.
9. (Questions #9-10 are Cryptic Clues) Kwizzer is, not surprisingly, rather a spoiled baby with lots of toys. His favorites, though, are always the ones that contain a bit of this herb. (The cryptic clue that follows contains an indicator word that will tell you where to look for the answer. In this puzzle, the indicator is "initially.") Initially, certain animals take no interest, presumably.

Answer: Catnip

The initial letters of the phrase, "Certain animals take no interest, presumably" spell "catnip."

Not all cats are susceptible to the intoxicating effects of the herb called Nepeta cataria. "Middle-aged" cats are the most likely to react to catnip, but due to genetic differences, some cats (especially in Australia) do not care for it at any age.
10. (Cryptic Clue) Kwizzer must be very happy and contented with my quiz so far! He's making a nice, pleasant sound right now to let me know that he likes it. (Another cryptic clue with another indicator word.) The answer is hidden in Spurr crater.

Answer: Purr

"Hidden" is the indicator word, and the answer, "purr," is hidden within "Spurr."

"Why do cats purr?" An oft-asked question, one obvious answer is that a cat purrs when it is happy and contented, such as when being petted by its loving owner. A mother cat also purrs to communicate with her kittens. However, a hurt or traumatized cat may purr, too - attempting to soothe and heal itself.
