Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. He's known as "King of the Jungle", only that isn't where he lives, though he does give his name to a sign of the zodiac.

Answer: Leo

"...jungLE Only..."

As a sign of the western zodiac, Leo, represented by a lion, covers the dates 23 July to 22 August each year. The mascot of MGM pictures, seen roaring at the beginning of many a movie, is named Leo the Lion.

The lion, or Panthera leo, lives not in what we think of as jungle, but in grasslands known in Africa as savannas. The male with his familiar mane and muscular build is nevertheless suited to the name of "King".
2. In the Serengeti, Gerald tried to find this feline, to no avail.

Answer: Tiger

"...SerengeTI GERald..."

Searching for a tiger (Panthera tigris) in the Serengeti of Kenya and Tanzania would be a fruitless search, as tigers are not to be found in any part of Africa, at least not in the wild. The striped big cats can be found on the Indian subcontinent and other parts of Asia, though are not so widespread as they once were.

The tiger is one of the animals of the Chinese zodiac.
3. When making the Hajj, a Guarani-speaker will be of little use, but one might help you find this big cat.

Answer: jaguar

"...hajJ A GUARani...."

The jaguar (Panthera onca) can be found from the southwestern USA to Argentina. Its range includes most of the areas inhabited by speakers of the Guarani language, an indigenous language of South America, which would be of little use to an adult Muslim making a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia.
4. Stop Uma from going that way! There's a dangerous animal on the prowl.

Answer: Puma

"stoP UMA..."

Puma concolor is the binomial name of the feline variously known as "puma", "cougar" and "mountain lion", which ranges from as far north as Canada's Yukon Territory to the southern Andes in South America. Though not always classed as a "big cat", the puma can reach larger sizes than some of those officially so branded.

There's also a brand of shoes called Puma, that uses the image of a leaping big cat as its logo.
5. Chortle, o! Pardner, at the joke I have made about this spotted creature.

Answer: Leopard

"chortLE O PARDner..."

(The oddness of this sentence should have helped you!)

The leopard (Panthera pardus) roams about sub-Saharan Africa and parts of western Asia and India, into southeast Asia. Distinguished by its spotted coat, the leopard is listed as "vulnerable" due to habitat loss.
6. Quickly now! Today's vocabulary words are "quiche", "et", "ahora" and "ayer". Where's the cat?

Answer: cheetah

"....quiCHE ET AHora..."

Again, the odd sentence should be helpful, but it's the word "quickly" that is the clue to finding the cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus), a large cat usually described as the fastest land animal, at least over short distances. It lives mainly in various parts of Africa, though the Asiatic subspecies is to be found in parts of Iran.
7. What do you put on your cereal? This big cat might roar about it.

Answer: Tony

"...puT ON Your..."

Tony the Tiger became the spokescat for Kellogg's Frosted Flakes (Frosties in the UK) in 1952, and has been telling us "They're grrrrreat!" ever since. The cartoon mascot has been voiced by various people, on both sides of the Atlantic, though the most familiar voice is that of Thurl Ravenscroft who was Tony from 1953-2005.
8. Did an angel save this cub? No it was George and Joy Adamson.

Answer: Elsa

"...angEL SAve..."

Elsa the lioness became famous in books written by the Adamsons, who raised her and her sisters after George was forced to kill their mother when the cubs were only days old. Even greater fame came with the film "Born Free" (1966) starring Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers as the Adamsons.
9. Perhaps I'm badly mistaken to think I'll find the young king near this rock.

Answer: Simba

"perhapS IM BAdly"

In the movie "The Lion King" (1994) baby Simba is presented to the world at Pride Rock, but must go into exile after his father is killed when Simba is still a cub. He prevails in the end and returns to take his place as King.
10. Will "Io" not win any awards? Is that because there is no big cat in the cast?

Answer: lion

"wilL IO Not..."

Here we are again, back with Panthera leo, our royal friend the lion, a number of whom we've met by name in this quiz.

The Netflix movie "Io" (2019) had nothing to do with lions, and was set in space near Jupiter's moon, Io, and though it was nominated for a minor sound editing award, didn't win anything.
