Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Fusion or fission? Which will result in something a sailor might use to know where he is, when applied to the image?

Answer: Fission

The image on the left is of a chariot, and on the right is Io, a moon of Jupiter.

Chariot - Io = Char(io)t, or chart

A nautical chart, as used by sailors, is a map of an area of sea or ocean, showing depths, shoals and other important features.
2. Fusion or fission? After deciding what these pictures represent, decide which action will produce a natural wonder such as the one near Goat Island.

Answer: Fusion

The top picture, of a river, represents water, while the lower photo shows autumn colours, also known as fall colours.

Water + fall = Waterfall

Goat Island sits in the Niagara River, just above Niagara Falls.
3. Fusion or fission? Which will result in a utensil for preparing one of the pictured items?

Answer: Fission

Pancake - cake = pan

In some circles, Shrove Tuesday is also known as Pancake Day, when one indulges one's sweet tooth one last time before giving up goodies for Lent.
4. Fusion or fission? After working out what each photo represents, choose the action that will result in a word meaning family.

Answer: Fission

The cupcakes represent baking, and the lower picture is a shopping bag.

Baking - bag = (ba)kin(g), or kin

Kin encompasses all sorts of relations. Even a distant cousin might be referred to as a kinsman.
5. Fusion or fission? Which action will transform these photos into something a child might enjoy eating with chips?

Answer: Fusion

The goldfish in the pond will, one hopes, not really be combined with the pile of sticks to complete this equation!

Fish + sticks = fish sticks

When I was young, Friday night dinner was always fish sticks and chips. Sometimes it still is.
6. Fusion or fission? Which action will produce something to put on a Christmas present from these two weather photos?

Answer: Fission

Rainbow - rain = bow

Some people can create quite elaborate bows using just some ribbon and their own creativity. Mine tend to be small and lop-sided.
7. Fusion or fission? Which action will result in a piece of furniture when applied to these photos?

Answer: Fission

Flowerbed - flower = bed

These flower pictures were taken on the day of the local Garden Show, which always involves a lot of walking to see the lovely gardens. By the time I get home, I'm ready for my bed!
8. Fusion or fission? What must be done to these photos to produce a musical instrument?

Answer: Fusion

Bag + pipes = Bagpipes

Depending on your taste, bagpipes are either the most wonderful instrument in the world or sound like a pack of cats fighting in an alley. I'm on the 'wonderful instrument' team.
9. Fusion or fission? Which action will result in a built-in mechanism designed to prevent total catastrophe?

Answer: Fusion

The F on the exam paper represents the word 'fail', and the advertisement is for a safe.

Fail + safe = Fail-safe

"Fail-Safe" was the title of a 1964 movie starring Henry Fonda and Walter Matthau, set during the Cold War. The story looked at what might happen if the fail-safe to prevent nuclear war was ineffective.
10. Fusion or fission? If you are thirsty and want a drink, what action should be performed on these photos?

Answer: Fission

Watermelon - melon = Water

The melon in the second photo is a honeydew, while the watermelon was a prize winner at a local fair. Water is one of my two favourite beverages, and the one that is best for quenching one's thirst.
