Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The outer layer of bread + Homophone of people living in India or China

Answer: Crustaceans

Lobsters, shrimp, crabs, wood lice, water fleas, and barnacles are all crustaceans. There is a massive total of 67,000 different species currently recorded world wide.
2. Calculate a total + Tool used for chopping wood

Answer: Addax

The Addax is a large antelope with a mainly grayish and white coat. Native to the deserts of North Africa, it is readily recognised owing to its long spiraling horns. Their diet consists mainly of grasses or shrubs where available, and they are able to survive without water for lengthy periods.

Whilst existing in substantial numbers in captivity, the species is critically endangered in its native habitat.
3. Arctic + Homophone of being unclothed

Answer: Polar Bear

Polar Bears are large creamy white carnivorous bears which inhabit the arctic region, living mainly on the pack ice. They are extremely powerful swimmers, and feed principally on seals. The adult males weigh between 350 and 700 kg, whilst adult females are about half that weight. Owing to habitat loss caused particularly by climate change, polar bears are fast becoming an endangered species.
4. Short first day of working week + A gander's partner

Answer: Mongoose

Mongooses are small mammals, native chiefly to Africa, southern Europe and Asia, with non-retractile sharp claws, short legs and long tails. Their fur is usually brown or gray, and often marked with bands or stripes. Their diet consists chiefly of small rodents, earthworms and birds, but they are also noted for their ability to kill and eat poisonous snakes.
5. Lower Jaw + Cool + A

Answer: Chinchilla

Chinchillas are small rodents with long bushy tails, inhabiting mountainous regions of South America. They are also bred in captivity for their soft grey fur which is highly valued. In the wild they live in burrows or rock crevices, where their diet consists of fruit, leaves, seeds and small insects.

They are extremely agile and able to jump several feet if necessary, to avoid predators such as snakes, skunks and birds of prey.
6. Yellow food spread + Take flight

Answer: Butterfly

With the notable exception of Antarctica, butterflies inhabit every continent, with several thousand species worldwide. Most adult butterflies sport large brightly coloured wings, unlike the majority of moths which are related to butterflies but are generally nocturnal.
7. Homonym of a synonym of swindle + An exclamation

Answer: Cheetah

Cheetahs are long legged animals of the family Felidae, native to Africa and southwestern Asia. Their coats are tawny in colour and black spotted. They are credited as being the fastest of all land mammals, able to run at 60 miles per hour over short distances.

The cheetah is now listed as being vulnerable, having suffered from habitat loss and poaching in recent years, although steps are now being taken to arrest this decline in several African countries.
8. E + Twelfth letter of the Greek alphabet

Answer: Emu

Emus are swift running flightless birds native to Australia, known to run as fast as 30 miles per hour. Although flightless, they do have small wings which are mainly used in helping to cool themselves down. They are second only to the ostrich in terms of size, and may grow up to two metres tall.

The diet of emus consists of plants and insects such as beetles, cockroaches and grasshoppers.
9. Small skin blemish + Monopolize

Answer: Warthog

Warthogs are wild pigs with large protruding tusks, running wild in southern and East Africa. With wart-like protuberances on their faces, and manes of coarse hair, it is not difficult to see how they acquired the name. Their diet consists mainly of grasses, berries, roots, insects, eggs and carrion.
10. Silver symbol + Not in + Third vowel

Answer: Agouti

Agoutis are rodents related to guinea pigs, but similar in size to rabbits, and are also valued as a food source. Native to South and Central America, they are long-legged and generally agile. Their fur consists of alternate dark and light bands, producing a grizzled appearance.
