Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. UP + Unrefined work

Answer: Updraft

The word 'updraft' refers to the movement of air in a particular direction, in this case, up skyward. Downdraft, on the other hand would refer to the opposite force. Although both updrafts and downdrafts don't typically get noticed from ground level, their impact in the skies will affect air travel, particularly in commercial planes as they are the reason for natural turbulence in most cases. Updrafts are characteristic of low pressure systems as the air will typically rise in such situations while the adverse (downdrafts) will occur in high pressure fronts.
2. UP + Indication of beat or pace

Answer: Uptempo

Uptempo music tends to be quite fast-paced and is typically characteristic of popular, catchy rock songs. Based on the Italian word for 'time', Tempo is often characterized by the number of beats per minute in a piece of music. Progressing with even more of a tempo, musicians can begin with Moderato, an average moderate speed, and progress to Allegretto, Allegro, Vivace, Presto, and Prestissimo, which can exceed 200 beats per minute.
All of these tempos can be kept in line with a modern metronome.
3. UP + Specific twenty-four hour period on the calendar

Answer: Update

Updating someone is simply a matter of letting them know of any new changes to plans or otherwise; it's keeping people in the know. Updates in computer terms typically refers to a new patch or a build for an existing program. For example, if you play an online game, the creators will typically release update patches in order to fix existing bugs or to improve the overall quality of your experience. Between expansion pack releases, for example, "World of Warcraft" (PC) creators, Blizzard, typically release five major patches to their gamers in order to add content and keep subscribers entertained.

Many patches can be automatically downloaded, or in the case of non-online games, they can often be found on the game's website.
4. UP + Ranked evaluation score

Answer: Upgrade

Upgrading an item typically means to replace your existing item with something of greater value or something newer. Like with 'updating', 'upgrading' a computer system refers to either replacing your computer with a newer, better one or taking your existing system and changing the components to make it more up-to-date. On certain occasions, computer users can purchase upgrades for certain computer components online.

For example, upgrading the drivers on certain peripherals can often be done from certain homepages for your equipment. Downgrading is the adverse to this method.

For example, when Windows Vista was released for the first time, many downgraded back to Windows XP.
5. UP + Gripping and raising upwards

Answer: Uplifting

Something uplifting is typically something that can raise a person's mood or spirits. However, 'uplifting' may also refer to plate tectonics. The Himalayan mountain range, for example, was create as a result of the uplifting of a plate over another. When the tectonic plates of the world crash into one another an one plate slides over the second to create a ridge or a plateau (much like in mountain ranges or at certain coastlines), the process is demonstrated.
Coincidentally, uplifting music is also typically 'upbeat' or 'uptempo'.
6. UP + Bundle of cargo

Answer: Upload

Another computer term?! Downloading refers to receiving a file from another source. In this case, for example, you can download a program from a website that you have selected. iTunes, for example, is a program that can be downloaded directly from Apple's website. Uploading, on the other hand, would be taking a file and putting it onto a website or another host.

For example, people commonly take their own photos and place them on image hosting or social networking websites. In this case, the file is pulled from your computer and duplicated elsewhere- you are the contributing party. File torrenting uses both of these in its programming.
7. UP + Atop

Answer: Upon

Although this word can have many meanings, the most well-known of these is regarding a specific point in time. For example, many fairy tales begin with the words 'Once upon a time...'. Upon may also refer to where something is placed. For example, one could place an item upon a table, which means that the item is atop the table.

In a sense, the words 'Up' and 'On' work in conjunction most of the time in order to emphasize how something is supported by something else.
8. UP + Progressively moving upwards (ie. the sun)

Answer: Uprising

An 'uprising' is typically a rebellion. For example, a union may cause an uprising if they demand higher wages and strike, or a war will begin because of an uprising amongst a group of people in a country. Rebellion in general is a refusal to comply with a higher power's rules and guidelines.

Although it seems to be a negative thing, rebellion has resulted in peace as well. If not for rebellion, countries would never have formed; on the other hand rebellion has also caused war and strife.
9. UP + Collection of items

Answer: Upset

While 'Up' has been shown to be a pretty positive adverbial prefix in previous questions, the act of 'upsetting' someone typically means bringing them down emotionally. In another definition, an upset can also refer to sporting events. In the case where the winner of a match is not expected to win but does nevertheless beyond expectation, it can generally be coined an 'upset'.

This can also be attached to political races where someone is elected or wins a vote despite being against the odds.
10. UP + Shape edge + 'Up' antonym

Answer: Upside Down

When one turns something 'upside-down', it typically means that they are turning it on the reverse. The top side of the object is being placed at the bottom, thus turning it one hundred eighty degrees.
Jack Johnson also recorded a song titled "Upside Down" for his "Sing-A-Longs and Lullabies" CD for the "Curious George animated movie in 2006. Becoming one of the most popular songs for the CD and artist, it reached platinum status in its first year and showed on two Billboard charts. Diana Ross also released a song of the same name in 1980 to critical acclaim.
