Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the words in the instructions to a firing squad can be found in the letters of TASMANIA. Which word is it?

Answer: aim

The firing squad concept has been around for many centuries; in fact it predates the invention of the rifle by over 1000 years. In the early days, death was administered with bow and arrow. Very few countries still use the firing squad as a method of execution, with Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates being notable exceptions.
2. George, Paul, Francis of Assisi, Nicholas, Patrick, Joan of Arc. What venerated title do all these people share? The answer can be found in the letters of TASMANIA.

Answer: saint

Australia's first saint was Saint Mary McKillop who was canonised in 2010. She was not, however, born in or ever a resident of Tasmania.
3. In TASMANIA you can find a word that has several meanings. Some of these are- a herb used to complement a roast lamb meal, a place where money is made or, as a verb, to make something. What is this handy little word?

Answer: mint

In stamp collecting, 'mint' refers to a stamp that has not been postally used. The word can also mean 'a large amount', eg, 'His house is worth a mint'.
4. Can you find a Scotsman's cap in the letters of TASMANIA?

Answer: tam

The tam or tam-o-shanter is a floppy cloth cap, usually made of tartan, with a pom-pom on top. It took its name from a poem by Scotland's favourite poet, Robbie Burns.
5. Which insect, with a religious name, is found all over the world, including amongst the letters of TASMANIA?

Answer: mantis

There are a couple of thousand species of praying mantis spread all over the world, with the exception of the polar areas. They are one of the few insects that can actually move their head independently of their body.
6. Which notorious African dictator can be found in TASMANIA?

Answer: AMIN

Idi Amin was the ruler of Uganda for most of the 1970s, after overthrowing Milton Obote in 1971. His rule was characterised by cruelty and executions of his critics. After being deposed in 1979, he fled to Saudi Arabia where he lived until his death in 2003.
7. This weather phenomenon, similar to fog, can be found in TASMANIA. It is a good hiding place for gorillas!

Answer: mist

'Gorillas in the Mist' was a movie about Dian Fossey and her work with the gorillas in Rwanda. Gorillas are not native to Tasmania or any other Australian state!
8. What word for an over-excited mental condition can be found in TASMANIA?

Answer: Mania

'Mania' can also mean a state of high desire or interest in a topic, eg pyromania is an abnormal interest in fires. I am not sure if the word 'triviamania' exists, but if it does then I guess many of us can now be classified as maniacs!
9. Which part of a ship, to which the sails are attached, can be found in TASMANIA?

Answer: MAST

Depending on the type of ship, there may be more than one mast. As a general rule sloops and yachts have one, brigs have two, barks/barques have three. Older sailing ships used fir or spruce for their masts, whereas these days aluminium or carbon fibre is preferred.
10. What seven-letter word, meaning 'endurance', can be found in the letters of TASMANIA?

Answer: stamina

Stamina is also the plural of stamen, the part of a flower where pollen is created.
