Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. An armed force that fights on land.

Answer: Army

The Army is the largest and oldest branch of the U.S. military. It was formed on June 14, 1775 during the American Revolution. Army personnel are known as soldiers.
2. Adult male sheep (plural).

Answer: Rams

A ram is an adult male sheep that has not been castrated. Castrated male sheep are known as wethers. Rams will fight each other to establish dominance within a flock. The ram is the symbol of the astrological sign Aries.
3. Not cold.

Answer: Warm

Warm is a word usually employed as an adjective, and implies a higher temperature than cold or cool, but less than hot. When used as a verb, it means to gradually increase temperature. It can also mean friendly or welcoming, as in "a warm smile."
4. The early bird catches this.

Answer: Worm

Worm is a catch-all word to describe any number of boneless creatures with cylindrical bodies and no legs. To most people, the word "worm" conjures up an image of the common earthworm, Lumbricus terrestris. Earthworms fill an important biological niche, turning over soil and and fertilizing it with their waste. They also serve as a food source for many species of birds and animals.
5. A black bird.

Answer: Crow

There are over 40 species of crows, all belonging to the family Corvidae. Crows are among the most intelligent of all birds, and have even shown an ability to make and use tools. They are also very long-lived; they can live 20 years or more in the wild, and the oldest crow in captivity reached an age of 59.
6. The forward part of a ship.

Answer: Prow

The prow is the forward-most part of a ship's bow as it cuts through the water. Technically, the prow is that part of the bow which is above the waterline. In actual practice, the words "bow" and "prow" are used interchangeably.
7. Not new.

Answer: Worn

Worn is the past participle of the verb "wear." Clothing is often described as being worn; many people are interested in what is worn by the stars at the Oscars ceremony, for instance. As an adjective, it denotes excessive wear, and is often paired with the word "out." Something that is worn out is so heavily used that it is no longer suitable for its intended purpose.
8. Alert others to danger.

Answer: Warn

To warn is to advise others of possible or imminent danger. It can, however, also be used as a caution, as in "I warn you, don't bet on the Jets!" or even as a veiled threat, as in "I warn you, don't try that again."
9. A thread is made of this.

Answer: Yarn

Thread is used for sewing, while yarn is usually thicker and is often used in knitting and weaving. Thread is actually a type of yarn that is twisted together. A yarn can also mean a story, often fanciful or with a good deal of embellishment and exaggeration.
10. An armed force that fights on the sea.

Answer: Navy

The United States Navy is the largest and most powerful in the world. It was founded on October 13, 1775 during the Revolutionary War. Men who serve in the Navy are called sailors. Sailors have a traditional rivalry with the Army and Marine Corps, and always believe their branch of the Armed Forces is the best. During World War II, legendary submarine captain Dudley "Mush" Morton owned a little dog named Trouble.

He would ask it, "Would you rather be in the Army, or would you rather be dead?" Trouble would roll over on his back, stick his legs in the air, and pretend to be dead. Navy blue is a deep shade of blue used for naval uniforms.
