Manchester grew rapidly from a small town to a major city during the Industrial Revolution. It was also known as a centre for political Radicalism and it was here that the Peterloo Massacre took place in 1819.

City and United are the two fierce rivals in football. Both have enjoyed periods when they have dominated English football.
