Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mighty Zeus, I think giving birth to both of our twins is a little too much for me right now. Do you think we can hold off on having the second one for a week or so? That'd be great. Let's have the girl first. Does that work for you?

Answer: Leto

...is a litt(LE TO)o much for me...

The daughter of Titans, Leto was a consort of Zeus and the mother of Artemis and Apollo. She gave birth to the twins on the island of Delos. Artemis was born first, followed by Apollo nine days later. In most myths, Artemis helped her mother deliver her brother Apollo!
2. Mighty Zeus, I am so tired of holding the earth on my shoulders. Please send me some reinforcements. I just need the briefest moment of respite, a bit of freedom at last. I pinky promise to take it back again...

Answer: Atlas

...freedom (AT LAS)t. I pinky promise...

Atlas was the son of a Titan and had three brothers: Prometheus (forethought), Epimetheus (afterthought), and Menoetius (doomed might). When Herakles was performing his Twelve Labors, he needed Atlas to get him the Golden Apples. For a brief period of time, Herakles held the world on his shoulders, but he managed to trick Atlas into taking it back again.
3. Mighty Zeus, help me, I pray. I have made a grave mistake and am paying the price. I am, as I speak, being chased by a giant scorpion! I, the mightiest of hunters, have been forced to flee in terror! I only have myself to blame...

Answer: Orion

...flee in terr(OR. I ON)ly have myself...

Orion was a giant huntsman in Greek mythology. He was killed by a giant scorpion sent by Apollo (in some myths it was sent by Gaea, the Earth) after he became close with Artemis. After his death, Zeus placed Orion and the scorpion, Scorpius, in the night sky as constellations. The Scorpion follows Orion across the heavens.
4. Mighty Zeus, my father, my city is being attacked! My reputation is being besmirched! I have been challenged on the Acropolis for control of all of Attica! The name of your first-born child will not be sullied in this manner! I will not back down! I will regain my land and send your brother back to the depths of the sea!

Answer: Athena

...all of Attic(A! THE NA)me of your...

Athena was the first child of Zeus, erupting from his forehead fully grown and in armor. She did not have a mother. Famously, Athena and Poseidon had a contest to be the patron god of Athens. They clashed atop the Acropolis. Poseidon rammed his trident into the ground, creating a salt spring of water (in some myths it was a horse). Athena pierced the earth with her spear and gave the people the olive tree. Athena won the contest (if she hadn't the city might have been called Poseidons)!
5. Mighty Zeus, I have been approached by two godly suitors yet I do not wish to marry. They have, for the moment, backed off at my behest. I am beseeching you now to allow me to retain my maidenhood forevermore.

Answer: Hestia

...at my be(HEST. I A)m beseeching you...

Hestia was the Greek goddess of the hearth and home. She was a virgin and turned away the advances of Apollo (her nephew) and Poseidon (her brother). When she swore to Zeus that she would be a virgin maiden forever, he gave her the honor of presiding over sacrifices.
6. Mighty Zeus, I hope this message doesn't get to you too late! I, um, opened a box. Please send some help and/or a fix as soon as possible. I fear I may have unleashed some evils into the world...

Answer: Pandora

some hel(P AND / OR A) fix as soon...

According to Greek mythology, Pandora was the first woman. She was fashioned from the earth by the god Hephaestus. She was given a box or jar that in most myths contained all the evils of the world. In other myths the box contained blessings for the human race. When Pandora opened the box/jar, all the contents were released into the world, bar one: Hope.
7. Mighty Zeus, my grandson has lost control of my son's golden chariot. We must stop him before it's too late! Please! He's been going on about hyper ionization and solar nuclear fusion and all sorts of crazy futuristic science talk for weeks. He was cocky and overconfident and cannot handle the sun! He's going to burn up the entire world!

Answer: Hyperion

...on about (HYPER ION)ization and solar...

Hyperion was a Titan and son of Gaea (the Earth) and Ouranos (the sky). His son, Helios, was the sun god and rode a sun chariot across the sky each day to bring light to the people of the world. Phaethon, Helios's son, thought he could drive his father's chariot, but was sadly mistaken. In myth, Helios let him try to fly the chariot for a day, but Phaethon lost control and scorched the earth.
8. Mighty Zeus, as I descend into the depths of the Underworld upon the river that once garnered me protection, I feel a chill escaping through the cracks in the stones around me and the cold freezes my soul. I have but one thought: couldn't Mother have just dipped my other heel in the water?

Answer: Achilles

...can feel (A CHILL ES)caping through...

Achilles was fated from childhood to die in battle. His mother, the nymph Thetis, tried her best to protect him. She dipped the infant Achilles into the River Styx to make him invincible, but she forgot to dip his heel, his one weakness. The River Styx was one of the rivers in the Underworld, and souls were ferried across it by Charon the ferryman.
9. Mighty Zeus, dear brother, I have fallen in love with a woman with the most beautiful eyes. And though my heart's desire urges me to propose, I don't know if I can live with all the snakes in her hair! What shall I do!?

Answer: Poseidon

... want to pro(POSE, I DON)'t know if...

Poseidon was the god of the sea, earthquakes, and horses. He fell in love with the beautiful young Medusa, who was a priestess of Athena. When Athena found out about Medusa's affair with Poseidon she cursed the young woman to have snakes for hair and a look that would turn anyone to stone. Medusa and Poseidon had two children together born from Medusa's severed neck when Perseus killed her, the winged horses Pegasus and Chrysaor.
10. Mighty Zeus, I just thought you'd like to know how pretty I am today. The halo of the sun, like a tremendous golden arc, is suspended above me, and its light shines off the still water into which I peer, illuminating my beautiful face and flowing locks. I do so love looking at myself!

Answer: Narcissus

...tremendous golde(N ARC, IS SUS)pended above me...

Narcissus was the beautiful son of a river god. One day he came upon his reflection in the water and couldn't look away, cursed by the goddess Nemesis after he rejected poor Echo, who pined for him until her dying breath. Narcissus starved while unable to look away from his own reflection and upon his death turned into the lovely narcissus flower, picked by Persephone on her way down to Hades.
