Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When a star collapses, it can turn into a black hole. At the centre of a black hole is a point with no volume and infinite density. What is that point called?

Answer: singularity

The 'Black Hole of Calcutta' was a part of the history of Europeans in India. In 1756, a large number of British troops were locked in a small cell, with most of them dying of suffocation during the night. Revenge was swift and brutal, with the Brits smacking their French and Indian opponents in the Battle of Plessey.
2. Lose a letter. Mix the rest. Lose your voice.

Answer: laryngitis

Laryngitis is inflammation of the vocal cords and larynx, and is usually not a dangerous condition. If your overly loquacious work colleague/friend/mother-in-law has laryngitis, you can usually count on about three days of quiet. Enjoy it while it lasts.
3. What name is given to a type of Australian possum? The name relates to the structure of their nether regions.

Answer: ringtails

Ringtails, or ringtail possums, are quite common in the eastern states of Australia. They have long, curled tails and huge eyes, and look like stubby, fat cats.
4. Drop a letter and turn a possum into a bird.

Answer: starling

Starlings are found on every continent, except Antarctica, and there are many different species.
5. What versatile word can describe critical evaluations, naval sailors, or even your assessments of my quiz?

Answer: ratings

Ratings in the navy are general sailors, below officer and NCO level. Ratings for my quiz should be as high as possible.
6. Drop another letter, and get something for free! Too cryptic? OK, what is the Latin word for 'free'?

Answer: gratis

The word 'gratis' is in many modern languages, and means the same in all of them.
7. Drop yet another letter and stir them up. You will end up with a southern US breakfast item.

Answer: grits

Grits. The word itself evokes the notion of eating dirt! During my trip to America I tried them and they definitely are an acquired taste; to my mind, it tasted like wallpaper glue, but they are actually made from corn.
8. We are down to four letters now. A big hint- you will find the answer to this one in the previous question.

Answer: stir

To stir means to mix. It can also mean to tease or provoke, or even to wake up. A handy little word.
9. Drop a letter and be seated. It can also be a command to your dog.

Answer: sit

It's also an anagram of 'its'.
10. Down to two letters, neither of which is a vowel. It can be an exclamation of impatience, or an abbreviation for a person that has been sanctified.

Answer: ST

It can also mean 'street', 'stanza' or even 'Star Trek'!
