Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Your first task is to find a really long word that means written authorities or qualifications. A couple of hints- it is 11 letters long and starts with 'C'.

Answer: credentials

Your credentials could include things like educational qualifications, employment records, or even a photo-ID.
2. Now drop a letter, mix the remainder and find the plural of a unit of volume. It equates to about 2.2 gallons.

Answer: decaliters

A decalitre is ten litres. Dekalitre is another spelling, but the K was an awkward letter to use in this puzzle.
3. Drop a letter. People that have been abandoned by society could be known as these. Ships and buildings could also be given the same description.

Answer: derelicts

It has a Latin root, simply meaning 'abandoned'.
4. Down to eight letters now. This word means careful, cautious, prudent or the ability to keep your mouth shut. Be careful with your spelling, as it has a homophone.

Answer: discreet

A priest who takes confessions would have to be VERY discreet. The homophone, 'discrete', means separate, not together. Queensland is discrete from Western Australia, as South Australia and Northern Territory are in between them.
5. What word would describe people that are trying to lose weight by monitoring their food intake?

Answer: dieters

There are hundreds of different dieting methods, some logical, some sensible, and some that are just crazy. Living solely on grapefruits and cheese for a week, or swallowing tapeworms is not only counter-productive, it can also be very dangerous. Ask your doctor, or find a reputable dietician.
6. Drop another one, and try to find a long walking step.

Answer: stride

If you stride out, you are walking purposefully. It is not a gait that you would use if you were clothes shopping, but you may use it if you were late for work.
7. Another letter gone. Are you exhausted, weary, worn out, in need of sleep or just plumb tuckered out? Perhaps you are in search of a synonym for all those words.

Answer: tired

Hopefully you can stay awake until the end of my quiz. It gets a bit easier towards the end- I promise!
8. What four-letter word can follow all these words- high, low, king, ebb, spring and neap?

Answer: tide

Ocean tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the moon. A low tide, or low water, means that more of the shore is exposed, and high tide obviously means the opposite. A neap tide is a lower-than-normal low tide, the inverse of a spring (or king) tide. Ebb simply means that the tide is going out.
9. Only three letters left, and I hope you get them in the right order! The 'Monty Python Show' uses many euphemisms for this word in the hilarious Norwegian Blue Parrot sketch. What does it mean to 'shuffle off this mortal coil', to 'snuff it', to become 'bereft of life'?

Answer: die

According to the shopkeeper, the parrot in question was simply 'pining for the fjords', 'asleep', and 'stunned'.

The fact that there are no parrots in Norway, blue or otherwise, seems to have slipped under the guard of the Pythons.
10. The 'Peoples Princess' was killed in a terrible car accident in 1997. By what two-letter name was she affectionately known?

Answer: Di

Lady Diana Spencer was the wife of Prince Charles, and was probably one of the most popular of the British royals, especially with the common folk. She was particularly passionate about children and campaigned on behalf of the banning and destruction of land mines in underdeveloped countries.
