Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bearing in mind the title of the quiz, which bloodsucking creature would you hope not to find when you retire for the night?

Answer: Bedbug

Bedbugs resemble lentils to look at, and have the scientific name of Cimex lectularius. They live in small cracks around beds, and come out at night to feed on the blood of anyone they can find. They are notoriously difficult to exterminate. Are you itching yet?
2. Starting with the final three letters of the previous question, what is a name for something which causes anxiety or stress?

Answer: Bugbear

The 'bug' part of the name is believed to have been derived from 'bogey', meaning something that frightens. In fact, another meaning for bugbear is 'a mythical beast' used to frighten children, especially a hobgoblin. My particular bugbear, when writing quizzes, would be 'Video Games', which I rarely play and know little about.
3. Starting with the final three letters of the previous answer, what name is given to an adornment for the hearing organ?

Answer: Earring

Earrings were worn as long ago as 3000 BC in the Middle East, when they were used an an indicator of the wearer's tribal identity. They were also a status symbol, with the jewels used displaying the owner's wealth. You could argue that nothing much has changed.
4. Starting with the final three letters of the previous answer, which word means 'multiple instances of ungratefulness'?

Answer: Ingratitudes

Ingratitude comes from the mediaeval Latin 'ingratitudo' and has been part of the English language since the late twelfth century. Anyone who has children could come up with a list of multiple ingratitudes in a short space of time.
5. Starting with the final three letters of the previous answer, what is a feeling of hopeless despondency?

Answer: Despair

The root of the English word is once again Latin. 'Sperare' means 'hope' and adding the prefix 'de' changes the meaning to without hope. It passed into English via Old French, and began life with the spelling of despeir, in the thirteenth century.
6. Starting with the final three letters of the previous answer, which word describes how frequently a song is heard on the radio?

Answer: Airplay

Airplay is a relatively new entrant to the dictionary, dating from the mid to late 1960s. Songs which are heard regularly on the radio may not necessarily be bought in large numbers by listeners but may still be considered popular because they have been heard so often.
7. Starting with the final three letters of the previous answer, which word can be used about someone who does little or no work?

Answer: Layabout

The word appears to date from the 1930s, and is really self-explanatory. Other words meaning much the same are 'loafer', 'idler' and 'bum', although in the UK the latter word tends to be used more to describe one's posterior.
8. Starting with the final three letters of the previous answer, what word describes what you have done if you have stayed somewhere longer than you were welcome?

Answer: Outsat

The word is used in the expression 'we outsat our welcome', where it is clear that your hosts are anxious that you should leave, but you are oblivious. It can also be used to describe tenacity, as in 'he outsat all the other candidates for the job'.
9. Starting with the final three letters of the previous answer, what is the name for one of the periods of twenty four hours at the end of each week?

Answer: Saturday

Saturday is the seventh day of the week, with the name deriving from the Latin 'Saturni dies', translating as the 'day of Saturn'. For those of us who work a five day week, Saturday is very welcome.
10. Starting with the final three letters of the previous answer, and bearing in mind the quiz title, which of these might you rest upon during waking hours?

Answer: Daybed

A day bed is a chair which can be used to recline or rest upon, and can also be called a chaise longue. It has an extended seat and is normally without arms. The expression can also be used for a convertible sofa, used for seating during the day and folded out to form a bed for nighttime use.
