Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This actor took some time off from tooling around "Route 66" to record "Teach Me Tonight," which reached number 25 on the Billboard charts.

Answer: George Maharis

In 1962, George Maharis was nominated for an Emmy but lost to E.G. Marshal ("The Defenders"). Maharis left the hit show during the third season due to health concerns aggravated by the grueling schedule of the on-location filmed series.
2. Who used his Western persona to regale us with the number one hit record "Ringo" in 1964?

Answer: Lorne Greene

"Ringo" reached the top of the charts in late 1964. The song had nothing to do with any British singing groups. In a 1955 episode of the CBS TV show "You Are There", Lorne played Ludwig van Beethoven.
3. It was in 1957 that this actor had a Top 40 hit with "Moonlight Swim". Name him.

Answer: Tony Perkins

Tony was an RCA "labelmate" with the likes of Elvis Presley and Perry Como. "Psycho" actor Perkins was also an ordained minister; in 1989 he performed Dennis Hopper's fourth wedding.
4. Who was looking for "Dutchman's Gold" in the 1960 Top 40 hit.

Answer: Walter Brennan

He followed it up with a Top Ten hit "Old Rivers." Brennan's limp in "The Real McCoys" was just a neat bit of acting; there was no real limp.
5. In 1967, which actor had a huge European hit with the romantic "I Love You, You Love Me"?

Answer: Anthony Quinn

Quinn studied architecture under Frank Lloyd Wright at Wright's studio in Arizona. When he considered an acting career friend and mentor Wright encouraged him.
6. In 1972, this blonde bombshell saw Top 40 success with a remake of "Gone".

Answer: Joey Heatherton

"Gone" was originally a hit by country star Ferlin Husky. Joey is the daughter of early TV favorite Ray Heatherton, who played "The Merry Mailman".
7. This TV detective "sucked" as an actor...then he recorded "If" in his best Barry White voice. Who was he?

Answer: Telly Savalas

Telly appeared in many movies, but his main claim to fame was as Kojak, the lollipop-sucking detective. In 1975, Telly had a major Euro-hit with "If" which was originally a hit by Bread.
8. This TV doctor's recording of his show's theme song was a Top Ten hit.

Answer: Richard Chamberlain

All of these TV doctors did, in fact, record LPs. Chamberlain's record "Theme From Dr. Kildare (Three Stars Will Shine Tonight)" reached number ten in 1962. He was also the first to record "Close To You" which became a number one hit for the Carpenters seven years later.
9. Which motion picture star teamed up with a singer-turned-actor to record a Top Ten hit in 1956?

Answer: Grace Kelly

Grace Kelly and Bing Crosby had a U.S. number three hit with the song "True Love" from the film "High Society". Grace was the original choice to star in the 1964 Hitchcock film "Marnie", but withdrew from the project when the citizens of Monaco disapproved.
10. Though best remembered as the son of a gun-toting homesteader, this youngster had four Top 40 hits in the early '60s.

Answer: Johnny Crawford

Johnny's biggest hit "Cindy's Birthday" reached number eight on the Billboard Charts. In 1959, Johnny was nominated for an Emmy as Best Supporting Actor in a Dramatic Series for his role as Mark McCain in "Rifleman". The winner was Dennis Weaver. In 1955, Johnny was one of the original Disney "Mousketeers".
