Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This singer's first role was in the 1959 MGM classic "Girls Town". Who was it sharing the silver screen with Mamie Van Doren, Elinor Donahue, and Gigi Perreau?

Answer: Paul Anka

If this wasn't enough, Paul's second film was "The Private Lives of Adam and Eve". By his third film he had it figured out; he played a peeping Tom in "Look In Any Window". "Girls Town" also starred Mel Torme as a gang leader and Mamie Van Doren as a high school girl... no... really.
2. He started as part of a brother act but found mega-success as a solo performer. He made his movie debut in the family film "80 Steps to Jonah". Who was he?

Answer: Wayne Newton

The film had Oscar Winner Jo Van Fleet and Oscar Nominees Sal Mineo and Mickey Rooney... and the star was Wayne Newton! He has appeared in numerous TV shows and movies often as himself. He was the first performer to have a "headliner-in-residence" deal when he signed a 10 year contract with the Stardust in Las Vegas.
3. When the hits dried up by 1960 this singer started acting in more television shows and movies. He appeared in films with James Stewart and John Wayne... including a part in the epic "The Longest Day". Who was he?

Answer: Fabian

Fabian played a U.S. Army Ranger in the World War II film. Singers Paul Anka and Tommy Sands also appeared as Rangers in the all star cast. Long after his records stopped selling, Fabian (Forte) toured regularly with fellow teen idols Bobby Rydell and Frankie Avalon in an act billed as "The Golden Boys of Rock and Roll".
4. When Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis finally broke up the act, Dean found even greater success in both music and the movies. In the mid-60s he starred as a secret agent in four films. Which one was NOT one of them?

Answer: The Return of Matt Helm

The success of the "James Bond" films triggered this series. The actual fourth film in the Matt Helm series was titled "The Wrecking Crew". The genre had apparently run its course and it did poorly at the box office. Matt Helm DIDN'T return.
5. He appeared in 14 films, as himself, before landing a movie role as someone else. Of course the someone else happened to be a singing piano player. The film was "Istanbul"... who was the singer?

Answer: Nat "King" Cole

Errol Flynn was the star of this 1957 film. Nat's role was not very big... but he did get to sing "When I Fall In Love". Nat was famous for his romantic ballads long before Johnny Mathis showed up. Starting with his first hit in 1943 to his final solo hit in 1966 he charted over 100 times with such classics as "Mona Lisa" and "Too Young".
6. It was in 1966 that Johnny Tillotson made his big screen acting debut. The movie featured insult comic Jack E. Leonard, Jayne Mansfield, Phyllis Diller... and Johnny as Dodo Bronk. What was the title of this cinematic masterpiece?

Answer: The Fat Spy

Johnny had been nominated for two Grammy Awards (in 1963 and 1965) and had placed 26 songs on the Billboard Charts. He is probably best known for his Top 10 hit "Poetry In Motion". This was Johnny's only acting role and he wasn't very good. This movie was terrible on so many levels his performance didn't matter. It may actually be the worst movie ever made.
7. "There's No Business Like Show Business" had Ethel Merman, Marilyn Monroe, Donald O'Connor, and a singer making his motion picture debut as Donald's brother. Who was that guy?

Answer: Johnnie Ray

Johnnie's stage persona has been described as the "bridge between the old-time crooners and Elvis." As for his acting... he was not a good actor and it's been said that some parts of the scenery turned in better performances.
8. Though he was only in a handful of movies (as someone other than himself) he did manage to appear in two Shelly Winters films... once as Mayor and once as President. Who is this world famous performer?

Answer: Little Richard

O.K... so they weren't exactly "Gone With the Wind". The films were "Purple People Eater" and "The Pickle". I'm guessing that Sir John Gielgud was busy and Little Richard was the second choice. Little Richard was probably the hardest rockin' of the rock 'n' roll pioneers.

His hits "Good Golly, Miss Molly", "Keep A Knockin'" and "Jenny Jenny" are all classics that have been covered by other singers. It's hard to believe but Little Richard never reached the top spot on the Billboard Top 100 chart.
9. Two years after winning the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, Frank Sinatra was nominated (but lost) for Best Actor In A Leading Role. What was that movie?

Answer: The Man With the Golden Arm

Sinatra won his Oscar for his role in "From Here to Eternity"; he was a soldier killed by sadistic Sgt. Judson played by Ernest Borgnine. The winner in 1956 was Ernest Borgnine for his role as "Marty".
10. For this singer 1962 started out with a Top 10 hit on the Billboard charts. Three more tiny hits that year and that was it. With no further commercial success it was time to try acting. What followed was dozens of TV roles including appearances in "Lou Grant", "The Waltons", and 40 episodes of "Little House On the Prairie". Who made the switch?

Answer: Ketty Lester

Ketty's biggest hit was the #5 hit "Love Letters". It was also a major hit in the UK and she toured there as a support act for the Everly Brothers' 1962 tour. Ketty was born in Hope, Arkansas.
