1. For which movie did Cate Blanchett win an Academy Award in 2005?

Answer: The Aviator

Cate Blanchett won an Academy Award for Best Supporting actress in the movie "The Aviator" (2004), where she played the role of another Academy Award winning actress, Katharine Hepburn; with Leonardo DiCaprio as Howard Hughes. She has been nominated for Academy Awards for many other movies including "Elizabeth" (1998), "Notes on a Scandal" (2006) and "I'm Not There" (2007).
2. In which movie, adapted from a Booker Prize winning novel, did Cate Blanchett have a starring role?

Answer: Oscar and Lucinda

"Oscar and Lucinda" (1997), by Peter Carey won the 1988 Booker Prize. In this movie Cate Blanchett played Lucinda Leplastrier, an heiress and owner of a glass factory. She bets Oscar (Ralph Fiennes) her entire inheritance that he cannot transport the glass church to the Outback safely

The other three movies are also based on well-known novels, but none have won the Booker Prize for literature. "The Talented Mr Ripley" was written by Patricia Highsmith; "The Lord of the Rings" by JRR Tolkein; and, "The Shipping News" was written by Pulitzer Prize winning author, E. Annie Proulx.
3. Cate Blanchett and her husband Andrew Upton both took over as artistic directors of the Sydney Theatre Company in 2008.

Answer: True

They took over from Robyn Nevin, who had been artistic director for seven years.
4. What does Cate Blanchett's husband, Andrew Upton do for a living?

Answer: Playwright and theatre director

They met in 1996. Some sources say it was while working on the movie "Thank God he Met Lizzie", other sources say it was during the play, "The Seagull". It may have been both. They were married in 1997.
5. In which film does Cate Blanchett play reporter, Jane Winslett-Richardson?

Answer: The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

"The Life Aquatic" (2004) is a quirky film with some of the weirdest sea creatures I have ever seen! Steve Zissou's character is based on the real life of Jacques Cousteau, and the film is part parody, part tribute to this oceanographer. Cate's character, Jane Winslett-Richardson was pregnant as was Cate during the filming of this movie.
6. Where was Cate Blanchett born?

Answer: Melbourne

Cate was born in Melbourne on 14th May 1969, two months before man landed on the moon. She is the middle child, with an older brother and younger sister. She later moved to Sydney where she studied at the National Institute of Dramatic Art.
7. A portrait of Cate Blanchett and her family, painted by McLean Edwards, won the 2006 Archibald Prize.

Answer: False

This painting was a finalist, but did not win. In it Cate wears a blue dress and is central, with her husband and children in semi-shadow. Her husband, Andrew, holds scrunched up pages in his hand - presumably manuscripts.

8. In April 2008 Cate Blanchett gave birth to a boy. It was her ______ child.

Answer: third

Their three sons are: Dashiell who was born in December 2001, Roman who was born in April 2004, and Ignatius (Iggy) born in April 2008.
9. Cate Blanchett's father died when she was ten.

Answer: True

When she was interviewed by Andrew Denton on "Enough Rope" (ABC TV in Australia), she talked about her memories of her father and the day he died. She was playing the piano and he waved goodbye and she didn't kiss him. So she became obsessed with kissing people in her family, just in case something happened to them.

She added: "when your parent dies young, you think there's not a lot of time, so let's get on with things".
10. Who did Cate Blanchett play in "Lord of the Rings" trilogy?

Answer: Galadriel

Galadriel is an elf with the power of telephathy. She narrates the Prologue, explaining how the rings were created. Cate said of her role as Galadriel: "I had never done anything with blue screen before, or prosthetics, or anything like that. Lord of the Rings was like stepping into a videogame for me.

It was another world completely. But, to be honest, I basically did it so that I could have the ears. I thought they would really work with my bare head."
