Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Helena Bonham Carter film's story took place in Montana, and then on a cross-country trip across the USA, but was actually filmed almost entirely in Canada? (Some exteriors of the Smithsonian were filmed in Washington, D.C.)

Answer: The Young and Prodigious T. S. Spivet (2013)

The story is about a ten-year-old boy scientist named T.S. Spivett (played by Kyle Catlett) who gets a phone call from the Smithsonian Museum informing him that he is the winner of the very prestigious Baird prize for his proposal of a perpetual motion machine. The Smithsonian invites him to come give a speech. Without telling his mother (Helena Bonham Carter) and father, he boards a freight train to get to the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. The film was a French/Canadian production and filmed throughout Canada instead of across the United States.

The capital city of the state of Montana is Helena. There has been plenty of filming done over the years in Montana, and specifically filmed in Helena is the TV series "Yellowstone" premiering in 2018. The 1998 Christopher Guest comedy "Almost Heroes" shot some scenes in Helena, as did the 1977 adventure film "Grayeagle".
2. Although born in Los Angeles, which actress is named for the city she was conceived in?

Answer: Bryce Dallas Howard

In an interview with Peter Travers on ABC-TV Bryce revealed that her father, the Oscar-winning director Ron Howard, christened each of his children with a middle name that was based on where they were conceived. "The rule was it's wherever we were conceived, it's so disgusting!" she laughed. It was a little bit different for her sisters though; Bryce was given the city name but her sisters Jocelyn and Paige were given the hotel as their middle name, so they wound up with Carlyle (of NYC).

The city of Dallas is also home to many famous people who were in fact actually born there, people such as Jessica Simpson, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, Melinda Gates, Nick Jonas, Vanilla Ice. The birth rate in Dallas: 6.3% of women between the ages of 15-50 gave birth in the past year according to Census Reporter.
3. Which of these actresses was born in Birmingham, and attended university near the city that shared her last name?

Answer: Kate Jackson

Kate Jackson was born in Birmingham, Alabama (not the one in England) and attended the University of Mississippi which is spread amongst several Mississippi locales including Jackson, the state's capital. Kate did however leave the university during her sophomore year to study acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Less than ten years later she would hit mega-stardom with the TV series "Charlie's Angels".

The Salvation Army Angel Tree program of Jackson, Mississippi helps provide Christmas experiences to children ages 12 and under and to senior citizens. The program provides toys for children in the area, and makes the heater is working for folks. They also accept clothes from mostly anonymous donors and provide those garments to the needy.
4. Which actress with a California city surname won a Best Actress Oscar, was nominated another four times, but never appeared in a film that was nominated for Best Picture?

Answer: Susan Hayward

Susan Hayward played an alcoholic in three of her Oscar-nominated roles: "Smash-Up: The Story of a Woman" (1947), "My Foolish Heart" (1949) and "I'll Cry Tomorrow" (1955). Her other two nominations were for "With a Song in My Heart" (1952) and the film for which she won the award, "I Want to Live!" (1958). That Oscar was presented to her by James Cagney and Kim Novak on April 6, 1959 in Los Angeles, California.

Hayward, California is located in Alameda County, California in the East Bay San Francisco Bay Area. Hayward is the 32nd most populated city in California, with a population of 159,203 in 2019.
5. Which of these actresses, all with city surnames, was the "winner" of the very first Razzie Award for Worst Supporting Actress?

Answer: Amy Irving

Amy Irving was voted the Worst Supporting Actress Razzie for her performance in "Honeysuckle Rose" (1980) playing Willie Nelson's lover. Her relationship with the Razzies has some historic significance in that she became the second person ever to be nominated for both an Oscar and a Razzie Award for the exact same performance: the role was Barbra Streisand's "wife" in the film "Yentl" (1983). Amy received a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination and a Worst Supporting Actress Razzie nomination for that role, but she did not win either of the awards. The first person to be both Oscar-nominated and Razzie nominated for the same role was James Coco in "Only When I Laugh" (1981). He also did not win either award.

Irving, Texas is the home of the renowned winners, the NFL's Dallas Cowboys. The population of Irving is about 220,000, and Texas stadium where the Cowboys play holds about 80,000 fans. That's over a third of the city's citizenry!
6. Which of these actresses, who share their name with North Carolina's most populous city, played Little Bo Peep on film?

Answer: Charlotte Henry

It was Charlotte Henry who played Bo Peep in the holiday classic "March of the Wooden Soldiers" (aka "Babes in Toyland") starring Laurel and Hardy back in 1934. Her character was rescued from the horrible fate or having to marry the villainous Silas Barnaby in exchange for his destroying the deed to the shoe that Mother Peep lives in. After Stannie Dum and Ollie Dee trick him, freeing Bo Peep from the marriage, Barnaby summons the Bogeymen to beset Toyland. Charlotte might be more famous for playing the title role in the all-star cast film "Alice in Wonderland" in 1933.

Charlotte is home to the NBA's Hornets, and the NFL's Carolina Panthers. Online opinion from customers' votes for the following among Charlotte's best toy stores: Toy Mania, Rebel Base Comics & Toys, Lakeshore Learning Store, Disney Store, Lionel Retail Store, Lego Store, Butterflies and Bullfrogs, Welcome to the Toy Shoppe, Hollywood Heroes & Villains, and American Girl Charlotte.
7. Nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1973, Jeannie Berlin is the daughter of what famous writer/director/actress?

Answer: Elaine May

Born to Elaine May on November 1, 1949 in Los Angeles, as Jeannie Brette May, when Jeannie became an actress she took on her mother's maiden name 'Berlin' as her legal/professional name. Jeannie claims that her mother was also her acting mentor. Elaine May was directing "The Heartbreak Kid" and she cast Jeannie in the role of Charles Grodin's newlywed wife. Jeannie says that, "Nobody believes me, but yes, I did have to test for the part, just like anybody else - even though the director was my mother, Elaine May." Jeannie was so good in the role she received an Oscar nomination.

In 2019, more people died in Germany than were born by about 161,400. In Berlin however, and also in Hamburg, there were more births than deaths.
8. She was born in England and then moved the United States when her mother married an Air Force man. When Carol Cleveland returned to her fledgling film career, she became a fleetingly part-time member of what famous troupe?

Answer: Monty Python

Carol attended school in San Antonio, Texas, then John Marshall Junior High and Pasadena High School in Pasadena, California. In 1960 she went back to London to start acting. Typically in the "Monty Python's Flying Circus" comedy sketches the male actors themselves would usually play the women parts in drag, except when a sketch called for a genuinely sexy woman. They certainly couldn't pull that off. So, it was Carol Cleveland that we often see in such roles on the show.

We don't often think of Cleveland, Ohio as a haven for famous comedy troupes, and although it doesn't, of course, have the reputation of Chicago, or New York, or Los Angeles for comedy clubs, it does have its fair share of places to see comedy shows. Bonkerz Comedy Club and Hilarities 4th Street Theatre are voted high on the list. There is also Improv, Laff House Comedy Club, and Neon Room.
9. Born in the Bronx, which of these city-surnamed actresses was once engaged to city-surnamed actor David Moscow, and won an Emmy Award in 2019 for Outstanding Variety Special (Live) for the show "Live in Front of a Studio Audience: 'All in the Family' and 'Good Times'"?

Answer: Kerry Washington

Kerry Washington was one of the several executive producers of that show, and thus shared that Emmy Award with the likes of Jimmy Kimmel, Norman Lear and others. Kerry is most famous for her role as Olivia Pope on the show "Scandal" for which she was nominated twice for the Emmy Award as Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

Kerry is an actress with a surname that is the same as the city her biggest hit show takes place in. "Scandal" was set in the White House of Washington, D.C. where she played a former White House Communications Director who has started her own crisis management firm. The first person to hold that title in the nations capital was Herbert G. Klein, who fulfilled that job under President Richard Nixon.
10. Which of theses actresses, with both a first name and last name that are the same as two big U.S. cities, was the daughter of an actor with two Best Actor Oscar nominations, and was herself nominated for 9 Emmy Awards (losing all of them)?

Answer: Elizabeth Montgomery

Elizabeth Montgomery was the daughter of Robert Montgomery who was Oscar nominated for "Here Comes Mr. Jordan" and "Night Must Fall". Elizabeth was renowned for playing Samantha Stevens on the sitcom "Bewitched", her twitch/wiggle of her nose was as endearing as Barbara Eden's folded arms head bob on "I Dream of Jeannie". Five of Elizabeth's nine Emmy nods were for for playing that homemaker witch. She was also nominated for a single performance in "The Untouchables" and the movies "A Case of Rape", "The Legend of Lizzie Borden" and "The Awakening Land".

A nickname for the town of Elizabeth New Jersey is "Eastwick" as in the "Witches of Eastwick". It is noted as being a slang "hood" style of referring to the city.
The Coven of the Live Oak is a working witch coven in Montgomery Alabama that hosts meetups in Montgomery on the first Saturday of the month. They perform online Sabbat Rituals for the homebound Pagans of the Montgomery community on a YouTube channel. Their spiritual path is the British Traditional Witchcraft.
