Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. David Blaine's first stunt was 'Premature Burial'. How long did Blaine remain within a coffin?

Answer: Seven days

David Blaine was inspired to perform this task because of a Houdini poster that he had since he was a child. The poster featured Houdini in a burial stunt that he never got to perform. In 1999, David Blaine placed himself within a glass coffin in front of a New York office building.

This coffin was covered with a large tank of water that allowed passers-by to view him within a large pit. Over seven days, he was able to view people of different cultures and races all in the same place, and they were able to view him. Every day, he was fed four tablespoons of water; nothing more.

He emerged exactly a week after he started.
2. Where did David Blaine perform his 'Frozen in Time' stunt?

Answer: Times Square

In 'Frozen in Time' (2000), David Blaine was placed into a block of ice wearing only boots and pants, and was sealed away for his second stunt. A single tube provided him with air and water, and also served as his toilet for the duration. Once again, an image of Harry Houdini was the inspiration for his stunt.
3. How long did David last inside the block of ice in the 'Frozen in Time' stunt?

Answer: Sixty-three hours

During the stunt, Blaine was forced to prevent himself from falling asleep and touching the ice for prolonged periods of time. He also fasted prior to the stunt to prevent from needing to use the bathroom. In performing the stunt of sixty-three hours, Blaine broke a world record and successfully completed his second daring feat.
4. How high above the ground was Blaine during his 'Vertigo' stunt in 2002?

Answer: 100 feet

In 2002, David Blaine took his next stunt above and beyond. In 'Vertigo', Blaine stood on a one hundred-foot pillar, less than shoulder's width for thirty-five hours. With no water, food, or sleep, this stunt could possibly be as dangerous as his previous feats.

After about thirty-five hours, he jumped off of the pillar into a ten-foot tall pile of cardboard boxes. He suffered a minor concussion from the fall, but he was otherwise fine.
5. What is the name of Blaine's 2002 autobiography?

Answer: Mysterious Stranger

Blaine's autobiography was split into sections. One of these was based on Blaine's past, magic, and mother, the second was about three magicians crucial to Blaine's career, and the third was based on his career on the street and with ABC. He also talked about his preparation for his first three stunts. The book also contained much more than an autobiography. It included a riddle.
6. Where was the $100,000 hidden after the riddle in David Blaine's autobiography was solved?

Answer: Los Angeles

Hidden amongst the pages of David Blaine's autobiography was a puzzle and scavenger hunt. The winner of this would win $100,000. Sixteen months after the book was released, Sherri Skanes, from California, solved the mystery and found the prize under a rock on a private Los Angeles property.

She was able to do this using clues and symbols from Blaine's book. The riddle was created by a popular game designer.
7. What was the only thing given to Blaine during his 'Above the Below' stunt?

Answer: Water

In the 'Above the Below' (2003) stunt, Blaine trapped himself in a transparent box above Potter's Field Park in London. Here, he lived off water and viewed the world from four hundred and fifty feet above the ground. During this stunt, Blaine was heckled by many of the spectators, some of which used remote-controlled helicopters to fly food to him and some which threw paint and hamburgers at Blaine's box.
8. How long did Blaine last during the 'Above the Below' stunt?

Answer: Forty-four days

After forty-four days and nights, David Blaine was let out of his box. Had he stayed in the box longer, he probably would have died of starvation. During the stunt, David lost fifty-four pounds due to malnutrition, and he was forced to recover for many weeks. Although Blaine was tormented by many spectators in the first few weeks, the crowd cheered him on in the final week.
9. Where did Blaine perform his 'Drowned Alive' stunt?

Answer: The Lincoln Center

In 2006, Blaine began his fifth stunt: 'Drowned Alive'. In this stunt, he remained in a glass aquarium outside the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City submerged underwater for seven days. Here, he was viewed by the public and many celebrities before the second part of his stunt, which would occur on night seven.
10. At the end of the 'Drowned Alive' stunt, how long did David Blaine last underwater?

Answer: Seven minutes

After the seven days in the aquarium, David was supposed to spend approximately nine minutes underwater on one breath, longer than anyone else has done, and all the while, he would be chained down. During the stunt, David lasted seven minutes (and eight seconds) on one breath and was pulled out of the tank.

Despite all of the pain that he was in, and all of the damage that the water did to his hands and feet, Blaine was able to walk himself off of his aquarium.
