To put this opera simply, it is the story of two lovers, Tamino and Pamina, who must overcome great hardships with only the golden flute to protect them. Branagh's long time friend, Stephen Fry helped him with the film by translating the original German text into English.

Professor Lockhart is a vain and cowardly man who takes credit for other wizards bravery by using memory charms to ensure they don't remember a thing. This does eventually get him in bother when one charm backfires, causing him memory loss. Hugh Grant was originally wanted for the role but Branagh easily picked up the role and ran away with it.
