He was rebellious and angry, and did not get along well with any of his three stepfathers. He got involved in criminal activities at a young age, and in his early teens he was remanded to the California Junior Boys Republic, an institute for young miscreants. While at first he let his rebellious nature guide his actions, eventually he straightened out. He followed the same pattern after joining the Marines at the age of 17, and went on to earn an honorable discharge three years later.
