"The Scully Effect" was at first just a casual hypothesis by fans of "The X-Files" that Dana Scully's character inspired more girls to study science. But it was backed up by data in 2018: of the women scientists surveyed who were of the age to see Gillian play Scully on TV in the original series, nearly 2/3 of them indicated that Scully had been a role model for them.

She earned many awards and nominations for her portrayal of Dr. Scully, including Primetime Emmys and Golden Globe Awards.

At the end of season one, when Gillian announced her pregnancy, the network suggested that the show replace the actress. But producer Chris Carter refused and shot around Gillian's pregnancy at first by having her hide it with desks and trench coats. Spoiler: later it was explained that she was kidnapped, not by aliens but by a mentally unbalanced former FBI agent.

In "The Last King of Scotland", the protagonist, a young Scottish doctor, travels to Uganda to be part of a missionary medical clinic. He ends up becoming the President's personal physician and is thus a witness to the leader's increasing paranoia and violent acts.

The doctor is originally attracted to the missionary director's wife, played by Gillian. The film won the 2007 BAFTA Award for Best British Film and Best Adapted Screenplay.
