Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Though this actor had been around for several years before, his life was transformed (both on screen and off) in 2002 by the bite of a spider. After this, he went on to star in several other successful films, picking up a Best Actor Saturn Award along the way. Who is he?

Answer: Tobey Maguire

Following several minor film roles and TV appearances, Tobey gained the starring role in Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" which was released in 2002. "Spider-Man" came at a time when superhero films were gaining renewed popularity, such as "X-Men" (2000) and "The Hulk" (2003). Several of these films spawned sequels - "Spider-Man 2" was released in 2004 and "Spider-Man 3" in 2007.

Tobey Maguire's Saturn Award came after his performance in "Spider-Man 2", which was far from a flop, matching the action and entertainment of the first film. He also starred in "Seabiscuit" in 2003 and "Brothers" in 2009.
2. Buddy Holly, as well as being a solo artist in the late 1950s, released a successful album with his very own invertebrate-named band, The Crickets. Which of these tracks was released from the debut album of The Crickets and not from Buddy Holly's first solo album?

Answer: That'll Be the Day

Buddy Holly formed The Crickets in 1957 and their debut album, "The "Chirping" Crickets", was released later that year. As mentioned in the question, Holly was actually signed to two contracts - one with The Crickets and one as a solo artist, and his debut solo album, "Buddy Holly", was released in 1958.

Whilst the tracks from "The "Chirping" Crickets" were unsurprisingly a joint effort in terms of writing, Holly's solo album also included several collaborative works, with significant contributions made by The Crickets' drummer Jerry Allison and record producer Norman Petty.
3. The flesh-eating bugs in the film "Starship Troopers" (1997), may seem more likely to end one's life rather than change it for the better, but, for our next celebrity, they helped launch her acting career. Who is she?

Answer: Denise Richards

Prior to 1997, Richards' acting roles were limited to television movies and parts in low budget films. "Starship Troopers" was not only a box office success, but it drew attention to the sex appeal of its leading lady. Richards went on to star in several films in the late 1990s and early 2000s, including the 1999 James Bond film, "The World Is Not Enough." She also made numerous TV appearances, such as in "Friends" in 1994, where she managed to mesmerise Chandler, Ross and Phoebe with her slow motion hair swish.
4. This personality became a chart success with his albums "Kings of the Wild Frontier" in 1980 and "Prince Charming" in 1981, which paved the way for a long solo singing and acting career. This success was achieved after he changed his name to Adam Ant; but under what name was he born?

Answer: Stuart Goddard

Goddard formed Adam and the Ants in 1977. The band went through a sudden line-up change as, under the influence of Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren, most of the members left to form new band, Bow Wow Wow. Adam continued with the Ants, however, and with the new members scored a UK number one album with "Kings of the Wild Frontier" in 1980. The band stayed together for five years before breaking up in 1982.

Arnold Dorsey is the birth name of Engelbert Humperdinck, Yusuf Islam is Cat Stevens and Christopher Collins is Frank Skinner.
5. Though already a well known actor, it was thanks to a certain invertebrate-related movie title that Ron Howard made his name in the world of directing, as it brought home two Oscars in 1985. What was the name of this movie?

Answer: Cocoon

Well remembered for his role as Richie Cunningham in the 1970s tv series "Happy Days", Ron Howard proved to many that he was not a one trick pony, directing numerous successful films over the past few decades. "Cocoon" was one of the first films of Howard's to establish his name as a great director, as well as being the first of many to gain recognition at the Academy Awards. "Apollo 13" (1995) emulated the double Oscar win of "Cocoon" and these were surpassed in 2001 by "A Beautiful Mind", which took home four Oscars.
6. Katie Price (also known as Jordan) remained in the public eye throughout the early 2000s, gaining publicity for the happenings in her personal life. Which of these invertebrate-related titles is a play on words of the 2009 TV series in which she appeared following her split from Peter Andre?

Answer: What Katydid Next

Under the name of Jordan, Katie Price became famous for appearing topless on page 3 of The Sun. Her "saucy" lifestyle led to much attention from gossip magazines, such as her relationships with ex-footballer Dwight York and "Pop Idol" runner-up, Gareth Gates.

After appearing on the 2004 series of "I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!", Price entered a relationship with former pop star Peter Andre, whom she later married (and divorced). Although she is often criticised for selling her personal life stories, many give Katie Price her due credit for successfully exploiting the public demand for gossip, as well as for her fashion and TV ventures, all of which have led to her becoming a multi-millionaire.
7. This celebrity *was* more used to entertaining thousands of blood-thirsty fans at Madison Square Garden, but creepy crawlies allowed him to successfully move into the world of acting, after his starring role in the 2002 film, "The Scorpion King". What is the name of this man?

Answer: Dwayne Johnson

Dwayne Johnson joined WWE (then known as WWF) in 1996, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, who were both wrestlers. Originally used to stir up controversy and wind up the audience, The Rock (as Dwayne is/was known to wrestling fans) soon became a crowd favourite and a multiple winner of the WWE Championship.
8. Musician Adam Young had worked on many projects before one of his songs, released by Owl City, shot to the number one spot in many countries around the world. What was the name of this song, which just happens to share its name with a group of invertebrates?

Answer: Fireflies

The song, in many ways, put Owl City on the map. It was a huge success all over the world, reaching number one in Australia, Denmark, Ireland, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands
(source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fireflies_(song)).

Reportedly making much of his music in his basement, Adam Young's "Fireflies" flatteringly became one the most covered songs of 2009/10.
9. This celebrity director made his name in 1988 with the multi-award winning "Beetlejuice". This film is best described as a dark comedy, which became a typical trait of this man's films. What is his name?

Answer: Tim Burton

Burton's films are characteristically gothic, and "Beetlejuice" was his first major success, taking home an Oscar in 1989 and three Saturn Awards in 1990. The main notable feature of this film was its make-up and special effects. Another quality of Burton's films are their use of particular actors, such as Johnny Depp, as well as Burton's wife Helena Bonham Carter.
(Quick bit of trivia: Helena Bonham Carter is the great grand-daughter of former British Prime Minister, Herbert Asquith)
10. Like countless other musicians, this man was heavily influenced by The Beatles. His debut album in 1969 took its title from the well known Beatles song, "With a Little Help From My Friends"; and his release of a single the same name gave him his first UK number one. What is this man's name?

Answer: Joe Cocker

Cocker's "With a Little Help From My Friends" single did well in several countries, but failed to receive equal credit in the USA. It was only a matter of time, however, until he was recognised and rewarded in the States, scoring several top tens and even a number one in 1982 with his track, "Up Where We Belong", on which he performed with Jennifer Warnes.

Not only did The Beatles influence artists of their time (Cocker's "With a Little Help From My Friends" was released just one year after the original), but it spread across many genres and is still felt today. The Brit-pop era of the 1990s is an obvious example, as Blur, Oasis, Pulp and The Verve all released songs which were influenced by The Beatles.
