Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Isla Fisher was brought up in Australia by her Scottish parents, but in which Middle Eastern country was she actually born?

Answer: Oman

Isla was born in the capital, Muscat, in 1976, where her father was working as a banker for the United Nations. Her family moved to Australia in the early 1980s and, at only nine years old, she began to feature in TV commercials over there.
2. Many people will have encountered Isla for the first time when she took on the role of Shannon Reed in a popular Australian soap opera. Which one?

Answer: Home and Away

In 1994, Shannon came to Summer Bay with her brother Curtis. In a scandalous development, the two of them turned out to be romantically involved. However, it turned out that they were not blood related and had just been brought up together in a foster home. So I guess that made it all right then?

Just to prove that soap operas are realistic, some of Shannon's storylines included battling anorexia and being sexually abused by her uncle. She then left the show in 1997 with a lesbian lover, in order to become an author. Just a normal lassie really!
3. Isla's first prominent Hollywood role was in a cartoon that was adapted for the big screen. Starring alongside the likes of Sarah Michelle Gellar, in which 2002 film did she play the role of Mary Jane?

Answer: Scooby-Doo

Isla played the love interest of Matthew Lillard's character, Norville "Shaggy" Rogers. Amazingly, our temptress turned out to be one of the bad guys. That eponymous brute of a Great Dane, discovered that Mary Jane was a monster. Like that could ever be true?

Just to prove how confused the script writers were, they also had Scrappy-Doo down as an evil megalomaniac. Didn't they ever watch the cartoons?
4. Isla Fisher was once engaged to which English singer, actor and presenter who is renowned for being a love rat?

Answer: Darren Day

Isla got a lucky escape with this one, as is testified from the fall-out of Darren's marriage to ex-Hear'Say singer Suzanne Shaw. To highlight the cynicism that his life is marked with, following his addition to the cast of Chester soap "Hollyoaks" (1995), I found the headline "Which Hollyoaks' girl will be the next fiance of Mr. Darren Day"?

Still, he makes the rounds on the reality TV shows with appearances including "Celebrity Come Dine With Me" (2005). I actually saw him performing panto in Manchester where he took on the role of the villain King Rat in "Dick Whittington". Well he was hardly a credible Lord Mayor of London now, was he?
5. Isla had a major breakthrough with her performance in which 2005 comedy, where she played the love interest of Vince Vaughn and sister to Rachel McAdams?

Answer: Wedding Crashers

Isla played the role of Gloria Cleary and won an MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Performance. Poor old Vince was just trying to help out Owen Wilson in his pursuit of Rachel McAdams, but Isla had other ideas. Vince tried to get away from her but failed miserably, and in the end, succumbed to her advances like any rational man would do.

Isla actually had a nude scene in this movie, but she elected to use a body double. In one interview she is quoted as saying, "I totally hate the puritanical approach to the whole nudity thing, but then when it comes to me I have double standards."
6. In 2004 Isla became engaged to Kazakh "Borat" (2006) star, Sacha Baron Cohen. In order for the two of them to get married, she needed to convert to which religion?

Answer: Judaism

The couple did not actually get married until 2010, which by celebrity standards is a very long engagement. One of the main reasons given for this is that Isla wanted to study Judaism before the actual wedding. In the end they were married in a traditional Jewish ceremony with only half a dozen guests attending.

Sacha Baron Cohen is noted for his alter-egos of bright-yellow shell suit wearing Ali G, gay Austrian fashionista Brüno, and Kazakh journalist Borat. All of these characters have now been retired.
7. As time progressed, Isla attained more prominent roles. In which 2006 film, in which her co-star was actor Jason Biggs, did Isla get a role as a leading lady?

Answer: Wedding Daze

In "Wedding Daze" (2006), Isla is just doing her job as a waitress when Mr. Biggs decides to propose to her on the spot. The two have never met before, so he expected an obvious "no", but our little princess was full of surprises and decided to say "yes". I thought of trying the same thing at Boots once, but I don't think that my wife would have been too happy!

So they spend the rest of the film getting to know each other, having a serious fall out, reconciling and finally getting married. Sounds pretty standard, until it got to their honeymoon destination. Jail!
8. In 2007, Isla gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. Which fruity name was she given?

Answer: Olive

A celebrity couple giving their daughter a normal name? What is the world coming to? Olive Cohen was born in 2007, with Isla and Sacha waiting until they saw the baby until they chose the name. She was born in Los Angeles.
9. In 2009 Isla got a film pretty much to herself. Based on the works of chick lit author Sophie Kinsella. In which film did Isla start out as a journalist for a gardening magazine, with aspirations to join the fashion magazine "Alette"?

Answer: Confessions of a Shopaholic

Isla took on the role of Rebecca Bloomwood, and proceeded to buy, get in debt, lose her job and naturally, get a guy, along the way. The film was not critically well received, but I can't imagine that a film about shopping is ever likely to compete with the likes of "The Godfather!" (1972).

There are plenty of books in the "Shopaholic" series of novels, which should keep fans going for a little while. One of them has the title "Shopaholic Ties the Knot". Surely, Isla won't end up in another film alluding to a wedding in its title?
10. Of all the people to fall in love with, you wouldn't want it to be a body-snatcher. Well, that's exactly what happened to Isla when she played the role of Ginny in which 2010 film?

Answer: Burke and Hare

Burke and Hare were the infamous body-snatchers who conducted a series of murders in Edinburgh, during the 19th century. They sold the bodies on to Dr. Knox, who would pay them a small sum for their find, so that he could use them for his research.

In the film, Simon Pegg played William Burke, who fell for Isla as soon as he saw her. She then proceeded to charm his socks off with her Scottish accent, and showed off her knowledge of Shakespeare. This encouraged Burke to finance her production of "The Scottish Play", where Isla took on the role of the lead character in an all female production. Who comes up with these ideas?
