Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which year was Ralph Fiennes born?

Answer: 1962

Ralph's full name is Ralph Nathaniel Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes, and he was born in England on 22 December, 1962, into an aristocratic family. He has six siblings, three of whom also work in the film industry; sister Sophie is a filmmaker, sister Martha is a director, and brother Joseph is an actor. His other brothers are Magnus, a composer, Jacob, who is a conservationist, and foster-brother Michael, who is an archaeologist.

Perhaps surprisingly, Ralph is pronounced like RAYF, which is the original, earlier pronunciation of the name.
2. Ralph is distantly related to the British royal family.

Answer: True

Yup, the Fiennes family is distantly related to the British Royal Family through Charles, Prince of Wales, who is Ralph's eighth cousin! Another famous relative is Ralph's third cousin, famous explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes. Ralph's parents are both, unfortunately, dead - his father Mark was a photographer, and his mother Jennifer was a writer. Ralph's paternal grandfather was industrialist Sir Maurice Fiennes. So there are many known names in his family!
3. Which of these women was Ralph's wife?

Answer: Alex Kingston

Ralph and Alex (an actress most famous for her role as Dr. Corday in "ER") dated for ten years before marrying in 1993. They divorced in 1997 after Ralph left Alex for actress Francesca Annis, who is 18 years older than he is. Ralph and Francesca had a long relationship, but split up in 2006 after Ralph had an affair with Romanian singer Cornelia Crisan.

Lisa Robertson was the Qantas air hostess who was caught with Ralph after they had unprotected sex aboard a flight! Ironically, Ralph was on his way to Mumbai to speak about AIDS awareness as he is a UNICEF ambassador - Lisa was fired from her job, but UNICEF kept Ralph on!
4. What is the first name of the SS officer Göth (also written as Goeth) whom Ralph played in the 1993 film "Schindler's List"?

Answer: Amon

"Schindler's List" (1993) was a movie based on Thomas Keneally's novel "Schindler's Ark" (1982), which told the true story of Nazi Party member Oskar Schindler, a Sudeten German businessman who actually saved more than 1000 Polish Jews by employing them in his factory.

Göth was an SS captain who arrived in Kraków to begin construction of a new concentration camp, and remove people from the ghetto, ruthlessly murdering anyone who protested. Despite witnessing this, Schindler (Liam Neeson) befriended him and bribed him to build a sub-camp for his workers. Upon leaving Kraków, Schindler asked Göth to be allowed to keep his workers for his factory in Moravia, which Göth agreed to, demanding a huge bribe for each worker.
5. Ralph starred with Jennifer Lopez in which movie, where mistaken identity led to love, albeit down a very confusing route?

Answer: Maid in Manhattan

Ralph and Jennifer starred in "Maid in Manhattan" (2002), a movie about a single mother named Marisa who was working as a hotel maid to try to get by. Ralph played Christopher Marshall, a senatorial candidate who was staying at the hotel.

Christopher saw Marisa after she tried on the coat of a socialite staying at the hotel, and assumed that she was the socialite, Caroline Lane. They ended up getting together in his hotel room after a fancy dinner, but Marisa was fired from the hotel for this. They eventually get together, with him knowing who she really was.
6. In which "Harry Potter" movie did Ralph first appear, as Lord Voldemort?

Answer: "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" (HP4)

Although the character Voldemort appeared in the first two movies, Ralph didn't appear until the fourth. Voldemort appeared in "HP1" on the back of Prof. Quirrell's head; this was computer generated. He appeared as his sixteen-year-old self Tom Riddle in "HP2", played in Christian Coulson. Ralph was also in "HP5", but did not appear in "HP6" - his nephew, Hero Fiennes-Tiffin, played Tom Riddle as a child, and Frank Dillane played him as an adolescent.

Lord Voldemort was of course Harry Potter's arch nemesis in the series, and his aim was to kill Harry, something he failed to do when Harry was just a baby, destroying himself in the process. In "The Goblet of Fire", Ralph's scenes reportedly only took 2 days to film - he appeared in the Little Hangleton cemetery, to which the Triwizard cup (now a Portkey) had taken Cedric Diggory and Harry. Pettigrew, Voldemort's servant, killed Cedric and used Harry's blood in a ritual to bring Voldemort back to an incarnate body, in which he dueled with Harry. Their wands locked together in what is known as "Priori Incantatem". Harry did not actually defeat Voldemort in this movie or the book, curiously.
7. Ralph has starred in two movies with French actress Juliette Binoche - once in his first movie role in "Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights", and more recently in which of these award-winning movies?

Answer: The English Patient

Ralph played Count László Almásy in "The English Patient" (1996), a Hungarian geographer who was critically burned in a plane crash. A nurse named Hana (Juliette Binoche) took care of him and, through flashbacks, his life was explored, including an affair he had with a married woman (Kristen Scott Thomas).

The film was nominated for a mighty 12 Oscars, and won 9, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress (Juliette Binoche). Kristen and Ralph were nominated for Best Actress and Best Actor.

In "Wuthering Heights", he played the role of Heathcliff, while Juliette played both Cathy Earnshaw, and Cathy's daughter, Catherine Linton.
8. Ralph sang "The Plagues" as his character in this movie, and was one of the few voice actors who sang their own parts. Which movie was it?

Answer: The Prince of Egypt

"The Prince of Egypt" was a fully-animated film, released in 1998 by Dreamworks, and had a Hollywood-star-studded cast, including of course Ralph, but also Val Kilmer, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Sandra Bullock.

Ralph voiced the character of Rameses II, adopted brother of Moses, and Pharaoh at the time where Moses returned to rescue his people, the Hebrews. When Rameses refused, Moses' God sends the Plagues onto Egypt - after Rameses' first-born son was killed, due to the final plague, he agreed to let the Hebrews go. He changed his mind at the last minute and pursued them to the Red Sea, where Moses has parted it to allow the Hebrews to pass. While Rameses' troops were washed away in the sea, he was swept onto the shore on the side of Egypt, calling after Moses.

It is disputed whether Rameses II actually was the Pharaoh of the Exodus or not.
9. Before another actor was cast, Ralph was considered for the role of Robert Langdon in which of these movies?

Answer: The Da Vinci Code

Of course, the role in "The Da Vinci Code" (2006) went to Tom Hanks instead, and was reprised by Hanks in the prequel "Angels and Demons" (2009). Robert Langdon was a religious symbologist, who must investigate the murder of a famous Louvre curator in "The Da Vinci Code". He was aided by the curator's granddaughter.

According to the Internet Movie Database (IMDB), Ralph is a huge fan of professional wrestling and is good friends with rapper Jay-Z!
10. For playing in which famous Shakespeare play did Ralph win a Tony award?

Answer: Hamlet

The Tony Awards (fully the Antoinette Perry Awards for Excellence in Theater) are awarded for excellence in live American theater, and Ralph won one in 1995, playing the title role of Hamlet. The play told the story of Danish prince Hamlet, who plotted to kill his uncle Claudius. Soon after Hamlet's father died, and Claudius married Hamlet's mother Gertrude, Hamlet was visited by a ghost, supposedly the ghost of his father. He claimed that Claudius murdered him by pouring poison in his ear, and asked Hamlet to avenge him, which he went on to try, amid fears of others that he was becoming mad.

It was while playing Hamlet that Ralph met his long-term partner, Francesca Annis, who played his mother Gertrude in the play.
