Powell was born in Portland, Oregon in 1929 and began to sing on the radio at age 13. She was a contralto soprano, although she could not read music or play an instrument. He father worked for Wonder Bread. Eventually the family moved to Los Angles where Suzanne (Jane) attended Beverly Hills High School.

The name seemed to 'stick' to her so the studio brass assigned 'Jane Powell' to her as a stage name. The film was also one of last appearances on film of W.C.Fields.
