'Green Lantern' was created by John Broome and Gil Kane with Hal Jordan being the character's second re-creation. This version of 'Green Lantern' appeared in the 1959 'Showcase #22' edition and has proven to be the most popular of the 'Green Lanterns' to date.

Paul's passion for motor racing was ignited by his role in the feature 'Winning' (1969) in which he played an up and coming racing driver intent on winning the Indianapolis 500. He formed the Newman-Haas champ car racing team with Carl Haas, has involved himself in NASCAR racing, was quoted that his most enjoyable sound is that of a V8 engine and has performed his own driving in films.

'Rachel Rachel' was the story of a thirty five year old teacher, living with her mother, suddenly required to make decisions about her relationships.
Newman, who collaborated with his wife in fourteen movies, became only the second person to direct his wife to a Best Actress nomination. Paul has acted with Joanne in ten feature films and directed her in four (those that were listed in the question) that he did not play a role in.

Newman received nominations for best actor as 'Fast' Eddie Felson, a young pool player taking on a well established champion, in 'The Hustler' (1961), who then trained a young protégé in the art of pool hustling in 'The Colour of Money' (1986). With the latter role Newman won the Oscar.

He portrayed the role of detective Lew Harper in 'Harper' (1966) and 'The Drowning Pool' (1975), however, he was not nominated for an Oscar on either occasion. His portrayal of lawyer Frank Galvin in 'The Verdict' (1982) did earn him an Oscar nomination but he performed the role once. Finally, while there was a sequel to 1973's 'The Sting' [Sting II (1983)], Paul did not reprise the role of Henry Gondorff nor did his effort in the first film attract the attention of the Academy. At the time of his death, Paul was one of five actors who have received two Oscar nominations for portraying the same character in separate movies.

Paul Newman was quoted as saying that he was pleased to be on Nixon's list and cited it as one of the great achievements in his life.
He further antagonised President Nixon by appearing on the cover of "Life" magazine wearing a lapel pin that promoted McCarthy's push to be the Democratic Party candidate for President of the United States.

The 'Hole in the Wall Gang' camp originated in Connecticut and now has centres in other parts of the US, as well as Ireland, France and Israel. Every year it provides a summer camp facility for over 13,000 seriously ill children, free of charge.
All of the other names mentioned above are fictitious but do allude to other areas that Newman has lent his resources. Aside from numerous donations Paul has also aided in the formation of CECP - Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy, sponsored the PEN/Newman's Own First Amendment award, established a scholarship fund at Kenyon College and started the Scott Newman Centre to help in the prevention of drug abuse.
In 1994 he was awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for his services to charities.

The movie was 'Rachel Rachel' (1968), which centred around thirty-five year Rachel, a school teacher who lived with her mother and was suddenly confronted with making relationship decisions. Despite the film gaining a nomination for 'Best Picture' and Newman collecting the 'New York Critics' award as best director, Paul was surprisingly overlooked by the Academy for his directorship of the movie.

Newman served in the Navy during the Second World War. Whilst he missed his opportunity as a pilot he did emerge as a radioman and gunner in the airborne torpedo squadrons.

Answer: Cool Hand Luke (1967)

In the movie Luke (Newman), a prisoner, succeeded in eating fifty hard boiled eggs in an hour as part of a bet. The quote attributed to Paul was "Twenty four hours in a day, twenty four beers in a case - coincidence?". There is argument as to whether this comment was found in one of his movies or used by Paul in a public speaking engagement.
Students are challenged to drink twenty four beers during this day while maintaining their normal routine and not sleeping during the period.
Newman wrote to the university indicating that he was 'disturbed' that his name was being used for the event, that essentially amounted to substance abuse and requested that the students 'break the tradition'. The university has distanced itself from the event stating that it is not an 'official' university programme and has encouraged the students not to partake.

The role of Quint eventually went to Robert Shaw, who had previously played Doyle Lonnegan alongside Newman's Henry Gondorff in 'The Sting' (1973). Newman had avoided wearing the tunic in 'Ben Hur' (1959) because he felt his legs were not good enough for the role and claimed the 'Dirty Harry' (1971) script was too right wing for his taste.

He recommended Clint Eastwood for the role. Ironically, 'The Eiger Sanction' (1975), which was another Eastwood film, was originally constructed as a medium for Newman.
