Quentin Tarantino--The Man and His Movies Quiz

I'm a big fan of all things Tarantino: I love his movies, and I can't turn away whenever he speaks (it's not what he says, but how he says it). The questions are culled from his many movies, the special features on those DVDs, and his TV appearances.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was Quentin born?

Answer: Knoxville, Tennessee

Born in Knoxville, Quentin was named because his parents wanted him to "stand out", in that his name would have been unique for the time.
2. What was Quentin's directorial debut?

Answer: My Best Friend's Birthday

"My Best Friend's Birthday" (1987) starred Craig Hamann and the man himself, Quentin. Quentin once said of the movie: "When the guys came, it was like, 'Oh you have another movie?' 'Yeah.' 'Can we see it?' 'No!'" The movie, which is very hard to find, pretty much tells of the exploits of a man and his friend planning a birthday party.
"Reservoir Dogs" (1992) was his second, and "Pulp Fiction" (1994) was his third.
3. Quentin has only directed movies.

Answer: False

Quentin directed an episode of "ER" (entitled "Motherhood").
4. In "Reservoir Dogs", who provided the voice of the DJ of Mr. Blonde's personal favorite radio program?

Answer: Steven Wright

"K-BILLY: Home of Rock." To me, it seems too much of a coincidence that "K-Billy" and "Kill Bill" sound THAT similar.
5. Which of Quentin's scripts is semi-autobiographical?

Answer: True Romance

"True Romance" is semi-autobiographical, except Quentin got involved in films and not drugs. "True Romance" tells the story of star-crossed lovers, Clarence and Alabama, who are in possession of a suitcase filled with drugs; they're being pursued by cops, druggies, and killers.
6. Which of these movies is the only one both written and directed by Quentin Tarantino?

Answer: My Best Friend's Birthday

"True Romance" was directed by Tony Scott. "Natural Born Killers" (the story of homicidal lovers) was directed by Oliver Stone. Finally, "From Dusk Till Dawn" (a tale of robbers cornered in a strip club populated by vampires) was directed by Robert Rodriguez.
7. On what TV show was Quentin's first guest appearance?

Answer: Golden Girls

Quentin appeared in episode 4.6 of "Golden Girls" as an Elvis impersonator. How I wish I could see that image...
8. Which of the soundtracks to a Quentin movie features a song by Urge Overkill?

Answer: Pulp Fiction

Urge Overkill sings "Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon", the song that plays, as Mia dances alone.
9. How many "Reservoir Dogs" are there (inlcuding the two that didn't go)?

Answer: 8

There are eight: White, Pink, Blonde, Orange, Blue, Brown, Joe, and Nice Guy Eddie. These eight men work together to steal fresh-cut diamonds. When the robbery goes wrong, they realize that one of them is an informant.

Blue and Nice Guy Eddie were part of the planning, but did not take part.
10. In "Pulp Fiction", which "Archie" character did Vincent prefer, Betty or Veronica?

Answer: Betty

In a deleted scene, Vincent tells Mia that he prefers Betty.
11. In "Pulp Fiction", after Butch saves Marsellus from Zed, what does the crime boss call Zed?

Answer: All of these

Marsellus calls Zed all three names, while striking an imposing figure holding the shotgun. "Pulp Fiction" is a tale of redemption (as the aforementioned scene displays), which centers on two hit men, their boss, their boss's wife, and a boxer told to throw a fight.
12. In "Pulp Fiction", where does Jimmie Dimmick live?

Answer: Toluca Lake

Jimmie lives in Toluca Lake. Jules has to get out of "the Valley" to find a friendly face (this is after Marvin's been... eliminated).
13. What's in the briefcase from "Pulp Fiction"?

Answer: It's never revealed

While many theories have sprung up surrounding the mysterious briefcase, Quentin has never divulged what was really inside.
(In the director's cut of "Pulp Fiction", it's semi-revealed that it was his soul in the briefcase.)
14. What does Jules call Pumpkin in the final scenes of "Pulp Fiction"?

Answer: Ringo

Honey Bunny's real name is Yolanda, but we never find out Pumpkin's real name. Jules calls him Ringo due to the British accent.
15. In "Jackie Brown", what was the name of the business run by Robert Forster?

Answer: Cherry Bail Bonds

Cherry Bail Bonds was the one who bonded Jackie out of prison, thus becoming Ordell's own undoing. After Jackie's bonded out, she decides to get back at her betrayer (Ordell) by stealing his money all under the noses of the authorities.
16. In "Jackie Brown", what did Melanie say got one higher?

Answer: coughing

"Oh, well coughing's good, it opens up the capillaries, you know when you cough you're pulling air, or in this case...smoke, into parts of the lungs that don't normally get used, and so, coughing's good, it gets you higher..." Melanie told an aging Louis this wise tip for stoners.
17. In "Jackie Brown", for how many people does Ordell pay bonds?

Answer: 2

Ordell buys a bond for Beaumont (whom he later kills) and one for Jackie.
18. On what activity do Ordell ("Jackie Brown") and Jules ("Pulp Fiction") critique others?

Answer: hand washing

Ordell reminds Max that he didn't wash his hands after using the bathroom. Jules lectures Vincent on the amount of blood left on a towel after hand washing.
19. Originally, how many movies was the "Kill Bill" saga meant to encompass?

Answer: 1

Tarantino wanted only one "Kill Bill" movie, but he decided to split the story since he believed people couldn't sit still for that long. "Kill Bill", a four-hour roaring rampage of revenge, tells the tale of an assassin who wants to back out of the business.

When she tries, her boss has her killed, but the job is botched. After she comes out of her coma, she embarks to kill the five who wronged her.
20. Quentin has been open to the possibility of another "Kill Bill" sequel.

Answer: True

Quentin has mentioned a "Kill Bill 3" in which Nikki (Vernita's daughter) comes looking for the Bride and encounters BB. Doesn't necessarily means there will be one, he's just open to the idea.
21. In "Kill Bill, Vol. 1", for what brand of cigarettes did Sofie Fatale advertise?

Answer: Red Apple Cigarettes

Red Apple is Quentin's fictional brand of choice.
22. In "Kill Bill, Vol. 1", who did the Bride kill first (chronologically)?

Answer: O-Ren Ishii

Chronologically, the Bride kills O-Ren first. However, the movie audience is exposed to Vernita's death earlier on, due to the unique time structure of the movies.
23. What is the Bride's real name?

Answer: Beatrix Kiddo

The name is indeed Beatrix Kiddo. In Volume 1, her name was bleeped out, but the airline tickets to Okinawa and Tokyo 'clearly' bear the name "Beatrix Kiddo".
24. Does the Bride eventually kill Bill?

Answer: Yes

In one of film's most genius moves, Quentin tells you the end of the movie, but he still manages to keep you in suspense.
25. For which auspicious film board did Quentin serve as President in 2004?

Answer: Cannes

Ten years after receiving the Palme d'Or from Cannes for "Pulp Fiction", Quentin served as President of that same board. The recipient for the Palme d'Or of 2004 was Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11".
