Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Rat Pack member Peter Lawford had what connection to U.S. Senator (and future U.S. president) John F. Kennedy?

Answer: brother-in-law

Lawford was married to Pat Kennedy, one of the five sisters of John F. Kennedy. Frank Sinatra had a falling out in 1961 with Lawford over his brother-in-law, Robert Kennedy's (then U.S. Attorney General), objections to Sinatra's alleged Mafia connections, and the two men never spoke again.
2. Who was the shortest member of the Rat Pack?

Answer: Sammy Davis, Jr.

Sammy Davis, Jr. was 5' 3", Joey Bishop was 5' 7", Frank Sinatra was 5' 8", Dean Martin was 6' (or 5' 11" from another source), and Peter Lawford was 6'.
3. Which Rat Pack member adapted (and recorded) a movie song as a campaign song for John F. Kennedy's 1960 campaign for U.S. President?

Answer: Frank Sinatra

Frank Sinatra adapted and recorded a special version of the tune "High Hopes" as a campaign song for Kennedy's 1960 U.S. Presidential campaign ("...Jack is on the right track, 'cause he has high hopes..."). The song "High Hopes" had originally been in Sinatra's 1959 film "A Hole in the Head" (Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen co-won an Oscar for it). They both later worked on the original 1960 version of the movie "Ocean's Eleven." Sinatra founded Reprise Records in 1961.
4. Which of these choices was one of the honorary mascots of the Rat Pack? (Hint: Her younger brother is Warren Beatty.)

Answer: Shirley MacLaine

At the opening of the U.S. Democratic Party National Convention in Los Angeles in 1960, Frank, Sammy, Peter, and Shirley MacLaine sang "The Star-Spangled Banner." She also had a small bit part in the 1960 movie "Ocean's Eleven," in which all five Rat Pack members appeared. Marilyn Monroe, Angie Dickinson and Juliet Prowse were other Rat Pack mascots.
5. What was the nickname used onstage for Sammy Davis, Jr.?

Answer: Smokey

Davis and his good friend Sinatra frequently sang a duet onstage with the song "Me and My Shadow." They met in 1941 at Detroit's Michigan Theater when the vaudeville troupe the Mastin Gang (featuring Sammy Davis, Jr.) opened for the Tommy Dorsey dance band (with their vocalist Frank Sinatra). They remained lifelong friends. Sammy usually smoked four packs of cigarettes a day during his lifetime.
6. How did Sammy Davis, Jr. lose one of his eyes?

Answer: automobile accident

In 1954 Sammy lost his left eye in a near-fatal car crash, while driving from Las Vegas to Los Angeles. He wore an eye patch for awhile, but Humphrey Bogart ultimately convinced him to forgo it. He used a glass eye from then on for the rest of his life.
7. Who was considered the straight man of the Rat Pack even though he wrote many of the comedy lines used onstage in their performances? (Hint: He later hosted his own TV show.)

Answer: Joey Bishop

Joey Bishop was a standup comedian from Philadelphia who opened for Frank Sinatra in the 1950s and stayed around for the Rat Pack years. He was the unofficial Master of Ceremonies when the Rat Pack performed and was especially well known for his deadpan delivery. Frank Sinatra called Bishop "the Hub of the Big Wheel." He later became a regular on Jack Paar's edition of American TV's "The Tonight Show" between 1958 and 1962 and hosted his own TV show "The Joey Bishop Show" from 1961-65 and 1967.
8. Which Rat Pack member got the caps on his two front teeth knocked out in a fight with a casino executive? (Hint: He had a temper and was always getting in fights.)

Answer: Frank Sinatra

The fight occurred in late summer 1967, reportedly being ignited when the Sands cut off Sinatra's gambling line of credit at $400,000. According to singer Paul Anka, who claims to have witnessed the debacle, "He got up on the table and started yelling and screaming right in the middle of the casino." The result was a fight with burly Sands casino executive Carl Cohen, in which Sinatra had the caps on his two front teeth knocked out.
9. Which of these Rat Pack members won one or more Oscars in the Academy Awards?

Answer: Frank Sinatra

Although both Sammy and Dean won many awards, only Frank Sinatra won Oscars in the Academy Awards (won two and was nominated for a third). In 1954, he won an Oscar for "Best Actor in a Supporting Role" for playing Private Maggio in the movie "From Here to Eternity." In 1971, he won an Oscar for the "Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award." In 1956, he was nominated for an Oscar for "Best Actor in a Leading Role" for the movie "The Man with the Golden Arm" but lost to Ernest Borgnine in the movie "Marty."
10. When three of the Rat Pack briefly reunited in 1988 for a final tour, who filled in for Dean Martin when he was forced to drop out due to illness? (Hint: This singer is related to Judy Garland.)

Answer: Liza Minnelli

In 1988 Frank, Dean and Sammy tried to rekindle the magic with a much-hyped tour, but it wasn't the same. Dean was forced to drop out due to illness and Liza Minnelli was asked to fill in. Minnelli's mother, Judy Garland, had been a good friend (and former drinking buddy) of Sinatra. Minelli's father, Vincente Minnelli, directed Sinatra, Martin and Shirley MacLaine in the 1958 movie "Some Came Running."
