Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How is Drew Barrymore related to Lionel Barrymore?

Answer: grandniece

This is a little confusing since the Barrymores were not only great actors but quite fruitful - let's start with the famous acting siblings of the 1930s and 1940s, i.e., Lionel, Ethel and John. They all married (at least once) and had children. Lionel's brother John had a son named John Drew Barrymore, an actor in the 1950s (as John Blyth Barrymore) and the 1960s. Now John Drew Barrymore was married to four different women; his third wife from 1971-1984, Ildiko Jaid Mako, gave birth to Drew Barrymore on February 22, 1975. Drew and third husband Will Kopelman had a baby daughter, Olive, on September 26, 2012...and the beat goes on!
2. Of all the following choices of Jacksons, which are the only ones who are actually related?

Answer: Tito and LaToya

Tito, one of the original "Jackson 5" singing group and LaToya, fifth child and tv personality, are brother and sister, both children of Joe and Katherine, and siblings of Michael and Janet, et. al. Reggie and Phil Jackson are a great baseball slugger and a great basketball coach, respectively; Joshua Jackson is from the teenage tv drama "Dawson's Creek" and "Fringe", a sci-fi show, while Kate Jackson was one of the original "Charlie's Angels" ("the smart one"). Mahalia Jackson from New Orleans, Louisiana is often referred to as "The Queen of Gospel" and Jesse Jackson from Greenville, South Carolina is a Baptist minister and civil rights activist.
3. Rick Nelson, son of Ozzie and Harriet, had twin sons who formed the band Nelson. What are their first names?

Answer: Gunnar and Matthew

Eric "Ricky" Hilliard Nelson (1940-1985) was an actor with his brother David on the 1950s tv show "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" where he played a teenage boy singer. When he grew up (and became Rick) he was a famous singer and heartthrob and had three children: Tracy who was an actress ("Father Dowling Mysteries") and identical twins Gunnar and Matthew who formed the band "Nelson" which had a #1 hit in 1990 "(I Can't Live Without Your) Love and Affection".

This put them in the "Guinness Book of World Records" as the only family to have #1 records in three successive generations: Ozzie with "And Then Some" (1934); Rick with "Poor Little Fool" ('58) and "Travelin' Man"('61).
4. Which of the following singers are NOT related?

Answer: Etta James and Rick James

Etta James ("At Last") was born in 1938 with the given name of Jamesetta Hawkins while Rick James ("Super Freak") was born in 1948 with the birth name of James Johnson, so no, they are NOT related. Dionne Warwick ("Do You Know the Way to San Jose") is the sister of Thelma Houston and aunt of Whitney Houston ("I Will Always Love You" and so many others). Loretta Lynn ("Coalminer's Daughter") and Crystal Gayle ("Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue") are sisters born in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky. Loretta was the second of eight, with Crystal the younger sister. Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees ("Saturday Night Fever") is the older brother of Andy Gibb ("Shadow Dancing" from 1978).
5. Which pair of U.S. Presidents is NOT related to the other?

Answer: Andrew and Lyndon Johnson

There is "no traceable lineage" connecting Andrew Johnson, the 17th President and Lyndon Johnson, the 36th President, although there are a few strange coincidences in their lives. Aside from the same surname, they were both from the South, both elected in the '60s, both served in a war and they were both vice-presidents who assumed the presidency after the incumbent president was assassinated. William Henry Harrison was the grandfather of Benjamin Harrison, i.e., William Henry's son, John Scott Harrison, was Benjamin's father. John Quincy Adams (6th President) was the son of John Adams (2nd President) and Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt were fifth cousins.
6. Which of these sports figures are related?

Answer: Bobby and Barry Bonds

Bobby Bonds is the father of Barry Bonds. Bobby was a Major League Baseball right fielder from 1968 to 1981, primarily with the San Francisco Giants; Barry was also an outfielder who played from 1986 to 2007 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Giants (from 1993 on) and whose achievements (although colored by the steroids scandal) make him one of the greatest players of all time, including the MLB home run record of 762 and single season home run record of 73 set in 2001. Melky and Miguel Cabrera are both MLB players (Miguel won the triple crown in 2012) with no relationship; Carson plays for the NFL while Jim was an MLB pitcher; the Johnsons both played pro football, but not related.
7. Which of the following pairs are actually related through bloodline or marriage?

Answer: Danny and Jenna Elfman

Composer and former lead singer for Oingo Boingo, Danny Elfman is the uncle of Jenna's husband Bodhi, i.e., Bodhi's father, Richard, is the brother of Danny, so Danny is Jenna's uncle-in-law. Jennifer Butala married Bodhi Elfman in 1995 and starred in "Dharma and Greg" from 1997 to 2002. FYI, Jenna's father's younger brother, Tony Butala, was lead singer for "The Lettermen" from 1958. Stockard Channing's real name was Susan Stockard and she is not related to Carol. Ginger Rogers birth name was Virginia McMath and she is not kin to "Mr. Rogers" or his neighborhood.

Although Gene and Grace Kelly both happened to be from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, that is their only connection.
8. Which film actress is the daughter of actor Vic Morrow, star of the 1960s television show "Combat"?

Answer: Jennifer Jason Leigh

Jennifer Jason Leigh was born in Los Angeles, California in 1962 and appeared in the 1982 film "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" about California teenagers, written by Cameron Crowe and starring Sean Penn as the iconic Jeff Spicoli. Besides the series "Combat", Vic Morrow is tragically remembered for the cause of his accidental death in 1982, while filming the movie "Twilght Zone: The Movie" he was decapitated by a helicopter.

The other choices were picked because they also are known by three names: Mary Stuart Masterson was in the 1991 film "Fried Green Tomatoes" along with Mary-Louise Parker; Carrie Ann Moss is known for her role in the "Matrix Trilogy" (1999 through 2003).
9. What is the first name of singer/actor Pat Boone's daughter, best known for the 1977 hit song "You Light Up My Life"?

Answer: Debby

Charles Eugene "Pat" Boone was one of the most successful pop singers of the late 1950s, second only to Elvis Presley, according to "Billboard". In 1955, his version of Fats Domino's song "Ain't That a Shame" was a huge hit. He married country music singer Red Foley's daughter Shirley, had his own tv show, was an actor and an author, claimed to be the great-great-great-great grandson of Daniel Boone, was voted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and had four daughters: Cherry, Linda, Debby and Laura.

The daughters first sang with their parents as "The Pat Boone Family" and later as "The Boones" and "The Boone Girls". Debby's hit spent a record (at the time) 10 weeks at No. 1!
10. Which of the following pairs is NOT related?

Answer: Katharine and Audrey Hepburn

Although they are both Oscar winning actresses, Audrey Hepburn (1929-1993) was born with the name Audrey Kathleen Ruston in Belgium, while Kate Hepburn (1907-2003) was born in Connecticut and known for her "headstrong independence" and her long-time affair with Spencer Tracy.

She achieved a record of four Best Female Actress Academy Awards for "Morning Glory" (1933), "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?" (1967), "The Lion in Winter" (1968) and "On Golden Pond" (1981). Audrey's Oscar was for the 1953 romantic comedy "Roman Holiday" with Gregory Peck.

As for the other choices: Liza and Lorna are half-sisters and daughters of Judy Garland, Emily and Zooey are sisters and Ron is Bryce Dallas' father.
