Due to his father's alcoholism, Samuel rarely met his dad, Roy Henry Jackson, and he passed away when Samuel was still very young. His mother, Elizabeth Harriett, was a factory worker who struggled to make ends meet. Samuel Jackson was raised by his grandparents and other family members.

Samuel L. Jackson suffers from stuttering and has done so since he was a young child. He had to learn to deal with it in school, and often pretended that he was a person who didn't stutter. In fact, there was also a year where he didn't utter a single word in public.
