Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Rolf first sang about "Jake the Peg" in 1966. Which superfluous bodily part did Jake possess?

Answer: Leg

Rolf saw another performer, Frank Roosen, performing "Jake the Peg". He contacted Roosen and added to the song to produce a longer version.
2. Another song associated with Rolf is "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport". In December 1963 he sang a customised version of the song on BBC radio. The song was customised in honour of his backing group on that occasion. Which group was this?

Answer: The Beatles

Rolf also sang an adapted version for the opening ceremony of the 1982 Commonwealth Games.
3. Which of these instruments is not usually associated with Rolf Harris?

Answer: Guitar

Rolf played didgeridoo on two of Kate Bush's albums. On his song Sun Arise the sound of the didgeridoo is replicated by four double basses. He also helped promote sales of the Stylophone, an electronic instrument that promised much and delivered little.
4. Rolf has presented many TV shows. The imaginatively titled "The Rolf Harris Show" first aired in 1967. What was the name of the dance group featured in the show?

Answer: The Young Generation

The other choices were all "Top of the Pops" dancers over the years.
5. In 1998 Rolf published a book about which unpopular historical figure?

Answer: Captain Bligh of "The Bounty"

Rolf also presented a four part TV documentary entitled "Bligh of the Bounty - World Navigator". It was produced by his brother Bruce and attempted to give a more balanced view of Captain Bligh.
6. In 1993 Rolf upset rock 'n roll purists and delighted the rest of the world with his rendition of which classic?

Answer: "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin

Rolf's version of "Stairway to Heaven" reached No 7 in the UK chart. It featured didgeridoo solos and accompaniment by wobble board. Rolf has also recorded a version of "Bohemian Rhapsody". He has also appeared live at the Glastonbury Festival. He was initially invited to appear as a one off novelty act but proved to be so popular that he has now made several appearances there over the years.

"Sabre Dance" is taken from the composition by composer Khachaturian. I would pay handsomely to see Rolf do a version with wobble board and didgeridoo.
7. In 1994 Rolf began hosting a show which publicised the work of the RSPCA. What was the name of this show?

Answer: Animal Hospital

"Animal Hospital" ran for ten years and proved immensely popular. It won the National Television Awards' "Most Popular Factual Programme" in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999 and 2000. Rolf's sympathetic manner made him the perfect choice to present this show.

A memorable moment was when a tough looking man bought in his elderly dog, Flossie. Nothing could be done for poor Flossie and when the vet broke the news, Rolf and the owner both burst into tears.
8. In 2004, Rolf enlisted the help of over 100 artists to recreate a 30' x 20' reproduction of which famous work of art?

Answer: "The Hay Wain" by John Constable

Rolf was joined by the artists in Trafalgar Square, London, to work on the project. Each artist completed a square of the painting. The finished painting was displayed in the National Gallery. Members of the public were also invited to join in with the project.
9. In July 2006 Rolf appeared on "The Richard and Judy Show" to promote opposition to which activity?

Answer: Seal hunting

Rolf performed "Slaughter on the Ice", a song he had written after a visit to Canada. Rolf wrote this after he had seen a news report about the Canadian seal cull.
10. In 2005 Rolf was commissioned to paint a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II to commemorate her 80th birthday. The portrait received a mixed reception from critics. Rolf was particularly pleased with one less than flattering aspect of the portrait. Which one was this?

Answer: The blueness of the veins on the hands

Rolf said that he wanted to create an impressionistic rather than a photographic representation of Her Majesty. The queen is shown as relaxed and smiling, rather than in formal robes. Presumably she liked the portrait, as Rolf was made a CBE (Commander of the British Empire) in June 2006.
